Microsoft previews Office for Mac 2011
Microsoft has released some details and videos that highlight features of the forthcoming Office for Mac 2011. Way back in the day when I had a G3 iMac, I used Outlook for email. I've since switched to Mail, but Microsoft has gotten my curiosity up with Outlook for Mac 2011. This update features a new Conversation View. With a click it provides an attractive representation of a long thread. It looked nice for the brief time it appears in today's video and rather Mac-like. While Entourage is more than I need, I'll happily check out Outlook 2011.
Also new to Outlook is Spotlight integration and improved Time Machine compatibility. It'll only backup new messages, saving disk space. Another marquee feature is what Microsoft is calling Ribbon.Think of it as an evolution the Office 2008 Elements Gallery that includes classic Mac menu and toolbar functionality.
There's no firm information on pricing or availability just yet, but keep your eyes on the end of this year.

Really looking forward to this - day one purchase for me.

July 29 2010 at 6:32 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replywhy can't microsoft do Office that opens in less than 20sec!
This is plain rediculous
Why can't Apple make an OS which don't suck?
All the office applications start on my windows machine pretty much instantaneously.
I don't quite understand the spotlight thing. There is spotlight integration in entourage (they touted this feature) and there is a whole pref screen for it so not sure what is different. You can select just spotlight searching of message text and/or attachments.
On the other hand, the 2 features that will be killers with outlook in our office are ability to finally run time machine without using terabytes of backup space, and .pst support (why they couldn't simply write an importer/exporter in the last 10 years I have no idea)
Still missing OneNote on the Mac. It's such an awesome Notetaking/Collaboration/... App.

July 29 2010 at 5:55 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI just want to note here that I absolutely hate Outlook for Windows and the idea of it coming to the Mac is terrifying. While I admit that Entourage is hardly good, Outlook surely isn't the solution to the problem because the whole thing is just so bloated, slow, and just plain annoying. That said, since I am no longer permitted to use a Mac at work I am now restricted to using a company laptop with Windows and therefore will not be experiencing the joys of Outlook for the Mac. At home I'll get a copy of Office 2011 (we're still on Office 2004) but I'll be sticking with Mail, Address Book and iCal simply because they are so much faster.

July 29 2010 at 3:36 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI've been running the beta since April and it is such an improvement from the 2008 version. It is much more natural going from PC versions to the Mac version which makes WAY more sense. Most of us already know how to use Word, so why not make it work the way we know?
And Outlook on mac is freaking awesome. Entourage was the bane of my existence. Outlook is easily the best piece of software MS has ever written. It is most definitely welcome here on my Mac(s).
Oh, and one other thing.... Preview on Attachments in Outlook works, just like in Finder!!!
You can click an attachment, push "Space" and it comes up in Quick Preview.
