Interesting, impractical iPhone concept lamp

And you thought using an iPhone as a flashlight was crazy...
Apparently the above image is just a concept for a flexible iPhone dock that one can easily bend into the form of a lamp. Obviously, the screen is bright enough to give enough light for a small desk area, but is it at all practical? Of course it's not. It should be using the iPhone 4 and its much brighter back-facing LED!
To me, the stand looks much too narrow to be practical as an iPhone stand, never mind as a lamp. Still, I've seen crazier things being done with the iPhone when one is in a pinch.

Another gimmick to make the consumer think he/she just 'has' to have one.
There's a sucker born every minute and someone ready to sell them something!
Wasteless use of time, money and material that could have been put to better use.
There's an app for just about everything else...so why not? The typical LCD screen is good for 100,000 hours, and I bet the typical iPhone won't get anywhere close to that before a new model in Apple's annual update parade will sadly tickle the fancy of its owner to otherwise confine the old one to the back of the old gadget drawer. If said owner wants to make his/her old iPhone into a mini streetlamp for their desk...go for it.

July 30 2010 at 9:43 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyUmmm...buy a $5 regchargable flashlight, buy 'stand' and drain and have to replace expensive 'I-Phone' battery? Plus article brings back sad memories of 9/11-WTC when cell-phone displays were used as a desperate attempt at a flashlight to escape. Sorry, this is one stupid idea! Almost as stupid as placing a attena where the person's hand 'grounds it' and makes it as useful as using a 'I-Phone' for a flashlight with expensive flashlight!!!!

I find that holding the iPhone during FaceTime can be a bit awkward during a lengthy conversation. Being flexible, simple and elegant would allow me to keep it on my desk at home or office. It also appears to be charging which would help if you plan to have a long call.

Except every Steve blow Jobber fan would pay $499 for this product if it had a touch on and off light and snooze alarm that went BOOM to wake you!
Isn't the idea that when there's no iPhone in the dock, there's a bulb in there and you bend it into a lamp? That's what it looks like to me, from the one on the left.
