The art and science of the iPhone 4 CAD drawings

If you're a sucker for technical drawings, then feast your eyes on the CAD drawing / iPhone 4 photo mashups recently published on Core77.

Hipstomp (AKA Rain Noe) found out that Apple had released the CAD drawings of the iPhone 4 exterior with special annotations for case manufacturers, and he promptly overlaid the technical drawings on top of the actual product photos. The result, as you can see in the photo above, is pure artistry. There are more drawings in the original post (click the source link below to view them), and if you'd like, you can download the bare CAD drawings directly from Apple.

Wouldn't you love to see an officially-sanctioned black T-shirt (or mock turtleneck) with this silk-screened on it?

Couple of hours of tinkering with the CAD drawings from Apple site and we have 3D CAD models for iPhone and iPods :) http://blog.grabcad.com/2010/08/apple-iphone-and-ipod-in-3d/

I was inspired by this and made a wallpaper that some people may enjoy.

I made a quick "wallpaper" by resizing the original pdf to a resolution of 2560 x 1600: http://i886.photobucket.com/albums/ac68/jstiles85/iPhone-4-dimensions.jpg

Hm. I notice in the original drawings that the proximity sensor on the white phone is designed differently than on the black. I wonder if proximity sensor issues could be part of what is holding up the white, not just color correction?

Ummm...this seems a little weird, bordering on "stalky".

I grabbed that the other day and made it my lock screen image on my iPhone 4. Looks great centered vertically between the time date area at the time and the unlock slider at the bottom.

What do Apple uses to design 'sexy' computers and other devices ?

Alias Design by Autodesk maybe ?
http://images.autodesk.com/adsk/files/aliasdesign_detail_bro_us.pdf

...or Catia ?

any guess or answer from the Apple Designer Jonathan Ive?

Seeing the border of the drawing, it seams that they are using NX (Unigraphics, Siemens).

Agreed, Ive also read that they use NX. And the interesting twist is that NX doesn't natively run on OS X. It's Windows only. What a devilish irony that is, eh?

That is until Siemens, back when it was Unigraphics, created a version only for Apple than runs on OS X. Or so the story goes. Many NX users are dying to have them release the code to the public so the app will run on a Mac.

Gotta love this warning on the CAD drawings: "NO METAL CONTACT WITH iPhone4 METAL BAND."
