Apple quietly slips into number three spot in global portable market

Who would have thought that headline would ever appear? Well it has, and if you count the iPad Apple has just passed Asus, Toshiba, Dell and Lenovo and is now the number three producer of portables.

That's the word from Fortune this morning, quoting Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore. Using the June quarter numbers from the banking company, Apple has moved from the seventh spot in the global portable market, trailing only HP and Acer.

Not fair you say? Well Deutsche Bank says iPad sales are cannibalizing demand for other notebooks, and the report also notes that sales of Apple laptops are also climbing.

Google doesn't sell phones any more and their are over 100 million iPhone OS devices in use and growing rapidly.

Android doesn't match that number.

Please mention one other country where iPhone 4 was launched on same day as US.

The figures will change drastically, since Apple just released iPhone 4 outside of US just three days ago. The iPhone sales depicted here is primarily from their market in US, whereas the sales of other companies are truly reflection of global sales. I would like to see which brand is on top after 3 months, that would be the true test of market growth.

Not surprising. As long as Apple is tied exclusively to AT&T then android will win marketshare.

What apple needs to do is angle its market better. For instance, here's a promising idea: http://www.pressdisplay.com/pressdisplay/showlink.aspx?bookmarkid=WH8SV6U92MQ6&preview=article&linkid=149d8255-64e9-4f61-b160-542f98ba7bae&pdaffid=ZVFwBG5jk4Kvl9OaBJc5%2bg%3d%3d.

All I'm saying is that naturally, one has to stay on top of the game at all times.
Besides, I'm almost positive that apple will bounce right up.

I think its cute when people tell Apple what they "need" to do, especially in cases in which Apple has not sought their advice.

That's different from a hope that Apple makes a certain product eg TV or adds a capability to a product eg face time on iPod Touch.

As happy as I am that Apple is gaining so quickly, I don't think the iPad is quite ready to be classified in the same category as laptops. The only reason I would say that is because the device can't really function on it's own without a Mac or PC to sync with just yet. I do think that it's not far off from that being fair though.

The title is a bit misleading. The verb "Slips" has connotation of moving accidentally out of place due to an error or miss happening. I'd change it to something with a positive connotation.
