Pricing, ship date announced for MS Office For Mac 2011
A few weeks ago Microsoft released the initial preview of Office for Mac 2011. On Monday, the company announced that boxes will hit retail shelves in October (all prices are USD).As usual, there are several editions to chose from. In the case of Office for Mac 2011, there are three. First, Microsoft Office for Mac Home and Student 2011 will retail for $119 and offer Word, Powerpoint, Excel and Messenger.
On the next tier is Microsoft Office for Mac Home and Business 2011. For $199 (or $279 for two installs under the same user), Home and Business edition adds Outlook to the mix (you can watch a preview of Outlook '11 here).
Finally, the economic Microsoft for Mac 2011 Academic includes Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Outlook and Messenger for $99. It's a single-install edition that will sell at authorized academic stores as well as directly from Microsoft.

It seems to me that Microsoft has a real problem in that there's little that needed to be added to Office, leaving little incentive to upgrade at any price.
With iWork available I find very little need for MS Office - even for professional work - with the exception of working with Excel. While Numbers does a passable job of basic number crunching, it still can't match Excel for graphing.
For this, though, Office 2004 is more than passable. I find it hard to believe that there's anything so new in the current version that I'd feel compelled to buy it. Mine may or may not be a typical use case, but I'll bet I'm not the only person for whom any new "extras" or enhancements aren't all that enticing.
While I'll use iWork for home stuff, when I'm working I need MS Office purely for compatibility so this is a sale for me. I've been waiting for Office 2011 to provide a compelling upgrade since I'm still running Office 2004 under Rosetta on a new iMac.

I don't mind them as much.. word is ok at what it does (just don't add images or complex formatting!) whilst excel is still very good compared to the competition
i've tried switching to numbers hoping for a speed boost on a certain excel file but it didn't give me much. my main complaint bout the office apps on the mac is that they take too long to load, they grind the computers to a halt
oh and the installer required rosetta!
PASS!!
I have no problems with 2008 version and I hate the ribbon in the PC up to date versions of Word, Excel. The ribbon is AWFUL so its not worthy of an update.
THey should only update office every 10 years, how much can they really add to Word, Excel?
Man why is it so expensive? apple's iwork is only $80 and its a single version not a lot of useless versions, and plus theres no well loved-activation key so it can be installed as many times as you please. Man i am so glad i do not have to put up with this company since i dont own a pc, allways MS ripping off people........

I also assume you cannot use the Mac Home and Student edition for commercial use. You are forced to use the more expensive the Home and Business edition.
MS Office is expensive. I will stick with OpenOffice or NeoOffice.
I thought I saw somewhere else that for the home and student version, the $119 price is for 1 computer and there is a $149 price that includes the up to three computers.
