Flickr find: Creative Griffin case mod nets owner a family of cases
If there's anything we love to hear about here at TUAW, it's great customer service. Reader Cristina made our morning with a story of how the team at Griffin Technology went out of their way to turn a bad situation into a happy one for everybody involved.Cristina had purchased a standard Griffin Reveal case with white sides to protect her iPhone 4. After a few weeks, she noticed that the "sides got really nasty," so she decided to bring it up to Griffin. She contacted customer service at the company through their website, talking to a customer service agent named Curt.
The two talked for a bit about the issue. Curt wanted to see the case to view the damage and also asked why Cristina couldn't just return the Reveal to Best Buy. Well, a quick glance at the case shown that she had modified the case into "Lester," who you can see at right. Yes, a pair of stick-on googly eyes and a red smear of paint had given the plain case a personality and a name.
Curt was in awe of the case mod, and mentioned that it would look good on his desk. Curt offered to send Cristina two new Reveals (one black, one white) if she'd send Lester back to the company. Cristina agreed, but only with the guarantee that Curt would take good care of Lester.
A few days later, Cristina received the black Reveal case. Yesterday, she received a much larger box containing what she thought would be the white case. Much to her surprise, inside were six Griffin Reveal cases, all with names and faces except for one labeled "Design your own."
You can view Cristina's new family of cases in her Flickr gallery.

I wish all companies could see the fun side of there products!
I had a less than pleasant experience with Griffin. I used to love their products, but now I'm just despising their customer service.
I purchased a Reveal for my iPhone 3GS back in 2009. In the beginning, it was a fantastic case, but soon dirt started getting between the phone and the case, and as a result, tons of deep scratches in the iPhone. I used this case for about a year, and just this past week the plastic near the volume part broke off, so I contacted Griffin to see if they could get me a replacement.
First I had to wait a couple days to get a reply (standard), which they then asked me for my information, product number, receipt number. When they got that information, they replied a day or two later, asking me to take a picture of the broken part of the phone, on top of the receipt so that numbers, are clearly visible, email the photo back to them, and wait for them to process it for two weeks. Seriously?
I once had a broken case with iFrogz, I contacted them, they asked me what color I wanted, and I got a replacement. No questions asked.
Even if Griffin's cases are cheaper, their quality simply isn't up to par anymore (scratches caused by crappy design of Reveal), and their customer service is such a hassle that I'd rather by from anywhere else.
Just my 2 cents :/
I bought a white Reveal and two days later, I took it back. The back polycarb was scratched to hell. And the sticky white silicone was yellow and grungy from handling. After two days! GROSS!
(And no, I'm not a dirtbag. I'm a frequent hand washer) The back is the same brittle polycarb as CD jewel cases. And you *know* how scratch resistant they are! ;)
Today, I paid through the nose for an Apple white bumper on Amazon. I'm betting Apple uses better quality material.
The company stole her idea.
So she gets 6 reveals?
Big deal.
the reveal comes in white? i only see it in black on their website...

August 04 2010 at 1:46 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI use a Reveal for my 3GS, it's a great tradeoff between protecting the phone while still being small and unobtrusive. Other cases seem huge by comparison.
The only downside is that the rubber edge at the top (near the jack for the earbuds) will eventually stretch out if you take the phone out of the case regularly. After about a year of use I had to replace it, which only set me back about $10 from Amazon.
Thanks for sharing the story Steven and for your comments everyone.
We do our best to be sure our customers are always happy.

Never heard of Griffin before, but after this, I'll be sure to try one of your cases for my iPod and recommend you to friends ;)
If only other companies can be like this :(
Thanks Tom. You may be familiar with our FM transmitter, iTrip.
Regardless, we're always happy to have a new customer. Thanks a million for your comment.
Cheers!
