Safari extension highlight: Exposer

With the addition of the Safari Extensions Gallery to Apple's website over the last few days, TUAW will be highlighting extensions that we think are special, useful, or just plain fun.

I was recently very glad to learn that I'm not the only one who keeps many tabs open in Safari at once. And I got reprimanded for it. But it's hard to teach an old dog like me new tricks, especially when an extension like Exposer provides a great overview of all open tabs.

Once installed, Exposer puts a Spaces-like icon in your Safari toolbar. When you've got multiple tabs open, just click it and a set of thumbnails appear, each representing one of those pages. Mouse over any one to highlight it, and click it to jump right over. It can be a bit slow to load those thumbnails, depending on how many tabs you have open, but it's still quicker than scanning cryptic (or crowded) tab titles. Try it out!

I tried it and it barely worked (YMMV). What a shame. Perhaps in the future it will improve because the concept is nice.

(Actually, it would be really nice if Apple just integrated tabs-Exposé natively into Safari!)

At first I wondered why the author would be scolded for using many tabs. I always use many tabs BUT then I read the comments and it seems many tabs is far far more tabs than I've ever considered. 100 tabs, what does that even do! I mean even the (x) to close wouldn't fit!

As is, the thing's pretty buggy, but it's a nice concept. Hopefully, it will improve over time.

Like Frederico, I can have many windows and dozens of tabs open, this doesn't help for that, as it only works for the active window. I'd guess it's really only meant for only for light use.

Looks like a 0.1 product. The slightly expanded views when the user hovers over don't fit inside the Safari frame.

Would make it much easier to find a tab if it also put the title of the tab into a tooltip.

It doesnt show RSS-pages or Top Sites(says "no preview available") and its not posible to load if you are on a RSS-page when you click on the icon or use the shortcut.

Jeez this thing is wonky.

When I saw the baked-in version of this for the new Firefox, I thought I might have to consider switching my daily research browser again. I have anywhere from 10-100 tabs open when doing work research. Finding the right tab becomes tedious, at best.

After trying Exposer all day, I may still have to switch to a more reliable baked-in version.

This thing is totally unpredictable as to when it will or won't work, and what kinds of pages prevent it from working at all. Page length/size and complexity seems to have a lot to do with it. Sometimes you have a working set of ten tabs in a window, then you add a new page, and it breaks. Reload that page and it might work. Or not.

Flash objects seem more likely to kill it, as do ad/noise heavy pages with lots of columns and "hidden" content; i.e., pages that might allow you to show/hide comments/objects, etc.

I'd love this thing to work, and I feel guilty complaining about a free extension. Oh, well.

It would be really nice if Safari split out all the tabs when activating application expose. Safari on Windows 7 shows all tabs independently when hovering over the dock icon, seems weird it doesn't do similar on OS X.

Alas, the link for Exposer takes you to a "contacts" page... http://contact.maypril.se/

Doesn't work consistently across tabs and has never worked when on the first tab. It also tends to lag at times. Nice idea but I think it needs some work.

feedly for firefox (www.feedly.com) was also added to the extension gallery today. If you are an RSS/Google Reader user, we would love to hear your feedback
