Rumor: iPod event next week
A Brazilian site named MacMagazine claims to have heard from a source within Apple that the company's annual back-to-school iPod press conference might be held as soon as next week. This is simultaneously pretty likely and somewhat hard to believe. On the one hand, MacMagazine isn't really a well-known vanguard of the reporting community -- you have to wonder why they've heard about this event when no one else yet has.But on the other hand, Apple of course runs a back to school program every single year, and considering that it's about that time, and that we've had a year chock full of innovation with the iPad and the iPhone 4, it's probably a pretty good guess that yes, sooner rather than later, Apple will hold an event to show off this year's iPod offerings.
And what might those be? Why, we're going with the perpetual rumor of a camera-equipped iPod touch. MacMagazine also suggests a new iPod touch would see other iPhone 4 features, including a gyroscope and possibly a Retina Display. It's gotta be true eventually, right?

I really hope that is true. If I were to buy an iPhone, I would be buying it for the 3G that my iPod Touch doesn't have. I rarely use my phone anyway. An iPod Touch with 3G is just what I want.

Mac OS updates are roughly 18-24 months apart with perhaps a preview six months out. Since we just had an update last year we aren't really on schedule for anything new in the next few months.
August 09 2010 at 10:17 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe iPod event is never held until mid September for a reason.
In other news, they better not kill off the Classic like rumors last year were saying.
I think it's for the iPhone Shuffle.

Call your contacts. On shuffle.
Imo this would be for iLife and iWork 2011 and a new/refreshed MBA, to complement the recently updated iMacs and Mac Pros. Thus completing the update of all Mac computers. Everybody knows that iPod related event is on September.

as for the rest, IF something happens next week, I'm thinking Pro Apps. It would go nicely with the new Mac Pro and recent imacs. Maybe ilife/iwork as well. Maybe not. but it won't likely be anything ipod since they have stopped releasing new ones during the Back to School and they tend to announce "shipping to stores today" rather than "available in a few weeks" on those
@Charli: Yeah, the Air is kinda "dead" if you look at Apple's current lineup. However, I think Apple could re-design the Air to completely replace the low-end Macbook. All it need is a few more ports and an SD card slot. Kill the Air brand, and pose the new "Air" as an aluminum unibody lighter and "thinner" regular Macbook without the internal optical drive.
August 09 2010 at 10:26 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyMaybe not an iPod event, but a Mac event? The September Music event is usually pretty consistent, and there's no particular reason to cut back on the free iPod Touch deals just yet.

"If youâre a college student or a faculty or staff member at any grade level and you buy a new Mac with Apple education pricing from May 25 through September 7, 2010, you can get a free 8GB iPod touch.* No wonder they call these the best years of your life."
I bought my new iMac a month before the free ipod touch giveaway, sucked.
