Navigon has a half off sale on pretty much anything

Has it really been a year since we started reviewing true turn by turn GPS solutions? It's a one year anniversary for Navigon in the App Store, and the company is celebrating the event with a half off sale on almost every nav app and upgrade offered.

Here's a breakdown:

MobileNavigator North America (includes maps for Canada & US): US $39.99 instead of $79.99
MobileNavigator USA: $24.99 instead of $49.99
MobileNavigator Canada: $29.99 instead of $59.99
MobileNavigator US MyRegion East, Central or West: $14.99 instead of $29.99, additional regions $11.99 instead of $14.99.

In-App Purchases
Traffic Live lifetime subscription: $12.99 instead of $19.99
Panorama View 3D: $4.99 instead of $9.99

This isn't the first sale Navigon has had, and it's probably not the last, but these are good prices for what I consider the best of the nav apps. Frankly, I think the sale prices should be permanent, but most of the competition has settled on $60-80 for the North American versions. The TomTom and Magellan apps are $59.99 for the US and Canada versions. Both are excellent programs.

There are apps with fewer features for less money, and some like Waze that are free. It's a good time to jump into the GPS pool, and whatever you buy it will be a lot cheaper than the factory installed models that often don't have the features of these iPhone apps.

The Navigon sale goes through August 15th.

I finally gave up on Navigon. It's maps are OK, but its address database is woefully inadequate. None of the streets in my neighborhood are in the database, so the Take Me Home feature just returned a cryptic error. It was fine for navigating to POIs, but useless for navigating to residential addresses, at least here in Richmond, VA. I downloaded TomTom, and have had no problems whatsoever.

Woo hoo...the world does not stop at the eastern US coastline. Bear this one in mind TUAW!

How does this compare to, say, a Garmin eTrex Legend CX? Is it possible to disable the speech? I prefer a simple chime to let me know of an upcoming turn. When searching POI, can the search be constrained along the current route? POI searches do me no good when I have to sift through results that would be 5 miles directly behind me, and then I miss the upcoming ones too because I was too busy trying to skip the ones I'm driving directly away from.

Can anyone explain the in app purchase for traffic on Navigon and TomTom?

Do the two applications have no traffic at all at base price or is this 'extra special traffic?'

Also, is it a subscription or a flat fee on each?

Thanks.

Whoo! Bought! I was thinking 2 days ago, that if it came down to under $30, I was going to get it. Awesome timing! :D I can afford the traffic and panorama view now too. :P

I was just thinking after I bought this, "Now I need a reason to go on a road trip!" Two minutes later my dad said that my uncle in Oregon just died. Not the kind of road trip I was thinking. :( S*** happens...

I bought the MobileNavigator North America and all the add-ons at full price. This sale is a slap in the face to me. Navigon will never get another penny from my wallet.. Ever. If they want loyal customers, they need to stay with a pretty-much fixed price, the way reputable companies do.

I'll have to check that out the next time I go to ATL. I guess Chattanooga just isn't big/complex enough :)

Does anybody else find that Navigon can give very strange directions sometimes? I have really noticed this when driving in-town. It is fine when driving on highways though. Anybody have any idea as to why this might be?

Yeah, I noticed it in Atlanta (along with my home town) where I am somewhat familiar with, it would take me these totally random routes. I don't think it is necessarily too much slower than what would be the fastest route. It is just slightly frustrating. Also, probably 75% of the time I am choosing the recommended route.

anyone know if this app will work on a jailbroken 3gs that has no data plan and is on t-mobile? i hope it would function through the gps only, thinking that the maps would be downloaded ahead of time.

Yes, the maps are part of the app. No data is needed.

I'll buy at those prices. I've wanted this for a while but don't drive out of my area enough to justify full price.
