Photoshop Express for iPad is the spawn of the devil, avoid for now

It seemed like such a great idea. Adobe was releasing a free photo editing tool for the iPhone and the iPad. Well, Photoshop Express is out, and it's a big, honking dog.

It has just about the worst ratings I've ever seen on an app from a big time developer, and those ratings are well deserved. On my iPad it launches, crashes, and then picks another app on my iPad to run. In my case it launches Photogene, another photo editing program. Huh?

For those lucky enough to get Photoshop Express running it crashes over and over. And over. Did anybody at Adobe test this thing? I'm sure it will be replaced by a working app at some time, but don't grab this thing unless you are really a masochist. It may be working fine for a few, but for most users the app is a steaming pile of frustration.

You've been warned.

Update: Several commenters note that launching the app in landscape mode may avoid the issues, which appear to be caused by PE trying to launch an introductory PDF the first time it's run.

For me, the app worked OK, but trashed my photo directory so Apple's Photos app wouldn't run. I had to delete all photos via iPhone Explorer and reload from iTunes before the built-in app would get past the launch phase. PhotoPad from Zagg has most of the same functions, without Adobe's ads and attempts to get you to use their cloud storage.

First, they are dissing Adobe, a current Apple enemy (flash).

Second.. Bwahaha, TUAW reporting without bias to Apple. Damn comedians.

Same here: and I'm talking 16 Gb 3G here - chose a photo, edited it using the impressively simple finger-slide controls, and uploaded it to Twitpic in no time at all.

Next try will be on my 32 Gb 3GS.

Still holding out for the elusive, lesser-spotted white iPhone 4.

Please, please have someone edit your articles before you post them.

How about this gem: "For those lucky anough to get Photoshop Express running it crashes over and over."

"anough"? Really? Is that a word? Also, commas are your friend.

Is there an award for terrible journalistic writing?

This is hilarious. They fixed the spelling, but can't figure out where the comma is missing.

Photoshop's always been a festering pile of toilet paper on the Mac. Pretty much ported from Windows.

The icon is apropo, the fact that they give it away for free should tell you what the state of the app is on any non Windows platform.

That's the 'Open in App...' API that nearly every other developer other than Adobe's offshore monkeys in India gets right. Read that again. Even kid programmers in the AppStore know how to use this API.

GoodReader, ReaddleDocs, all these allow you to 'Open in...' when invoked by the user ON A DOCUMENT (usually held via touch as a context menu).

I guess Adobe is so ashamed of this dog they just invoke another application instead on launch.
