British TV network angered over iTV rumor

The UK's oldest commercial television network, ITV, is supposedly livid over the rumor that Apple will rebrand the Apple TV as "iTV" in the near future. According to Mirror.co.uk, the network is already taking legal steps to "...stop the move." They're looking to prevent Apple from using the name "iTV" in any way. Mirror.co.uk quoted a source as saying, "We all take our ITV brand very seriously and we'll do everything in our power to protect it."

Easy, folks. It's just a rumor. iTV may be what's coming as a new name, or it might not. Besides, Apple and Cisco were able to work things out when Apple renamed the iPhone OS "iOS."

Can't we all just get along?

Imo it would be strange for Apple to rename the Apple TV to iTV. Heck, the name Apple TV itself is strange. It's a settop box, not a TV. Heck, it doesn't even have a tuner. Unless of course Apple actually is making a TV. If Apple redesign the Apple TV, presumably if it's using iOS and iPhone components, they can probably make it a cube, and call it iCube. LOL. Or if Apple want to keep the TV moniker, maybe iPod TV. I can already visualize the tagline: iPod TV, iPod for your TV.

I'd go for iTeat, after Harlan Ellison's name for TV: The Glass Teat.

Of course, he'd almost certainly sue, but would probably sell rights for cheap.

They have good reason to worry. The renaming if the iPhone OS to iOS pretty much forshadows Apple's intent to expand the OS out to other iDevices besides the iPhone, iPod and iPad... the Apple TV is merely the next logical step. Apple wants the AppleTV to become more than a media player, and adding apps to it (potentially creating a foot in the door for several consumer cloud services) is a surefire way to do this.

This could get ugly rather quickly...

There's no need to change the current name if they put iOS on it. Apple TV works. They've been selling them for several years with that name. No point changing it now. iMacs don't run iOS, and Apple TV can run iOS without having an i-prefixed name.

A legitimate news/TV corporation is "furious" over a rumor. Nice. Are they upset about Bigfoot or leprechauns too?

ITV are just protecting their name as Apple does with its brands. No more no less. I like Apple, but fanboys saying ITV us wrong is just ridiculous

This is a non-story made even sillier by a complete lack of facts.

Either Apple is revamping the Apple TV or not - we don't actually know.

If it is, then Apple may be planning on calling it the iTV or not - we don't actually know.

If Apple is planning on launching an iTV device then they may or may not have already made preparations to trademark or otherwise reserve the brand name in those countries where there already exists a television corporation called ITV - we don't actually know.

Meanwhile, someone who we don't actually know at ITV (the corporation) may or may not have reacted strongly to the rumour - but, yes you guessed it, we don't actually know.

@Gazoobee, what makes you think Britain has refused to join the EU? Britain joined the EU in 1973.

(You may be thinking about the Eurozone - those European countries that use the Euro as currency? But that includes only 16 out of the 27 EU members.)

Corporations don't get 'livid'. Or even angry. They're not a person and they don't have emotions. What they do do is perceive a potential threat to their corporate identity and, quite rightly, take steps to avert the threat.

Taking a lead from a UK redtop is a bad idea. The UK tabloid press make things up as they go along.
