iPhone app enables augmented driving, at your own risk
Let me preface this post by saying that I'm an old fuddy duddy.imaGinyze (US$2.99) is an iPhone app that provides an augmented reality Heads Up Display (HUD) for drivers on the road. When mounted to a windshield, it monitors incoming video information and produces overlays for roads, traffic, signs and more. An electronic voice announces lane changes, your proximity to other vehicles and other such distracting information.
I've been using alternative car- and lane-detection hardware units for decades, but they're called my eyes. Perhaps there's an obvious application for this app that I'm missing (smarter cars, enhanced night driving or what have you), and if so, please fill me in. But for now, I can't help but think it'd be a distraction while driving, and a dangerous one at that.
Even Luke understands -- sometimes you just have to put the hardware away and use the Force.

Please look at the date and tell me what I should do....
I like the idea of HUD, for displaying vehicle info such as speed rpm gas mileage, but I think if i miss the 4,000 vehicle in front of me, there is no way that I will catch it on a 4" screen, no matter how high the resolution is.

I do though see how it can be an extra pair of eyes on the road and alert you to things you may not of noticed then again I can also see people yelling at there phones saying "I know I know I see that car, I know I'm changing lanes, I see the traffic light shut up already"

August 20 2010 at 4:46 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replymight be interesting as an iPad app.
August 20 2010 at 4:30 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyExcept that that iPad has no camera. At least not the 1st gen.
And even then, the next gen may only have a front facing one, so it's pointless for the iPad, currently.
HUD for this sort of vehicle use has been around for a while. This is a YouTube video of a full-screen system GM showed off.

These systems though are designed to allow the driver to operate the vehicle with fewer glances away from the road.
I agree that by putting the HUD into an iPhone you're really just asking for trouble. The idea of a HUD is that they're Heads Up. There's no way to mount an iPhone in the line of sight, making them Heads Down Displays.
And we all know what happens when you take your eyes OFF the road.
Now blind people can drive?? I kid, sort of.
I can see how this would help anyone, but not on a tiny screen like the iPhone.
But, it could help if you have someone riding shotgun giving you some cues.
I only see this useful if you have a second iPhone (yes, iPhone, not iPod Touch, because you need the camera), and thus, this would help with those people who INSIST on texting, as opposed to being safe.
Only thing I can see it useful for...
Didn't they have that cool app where you were able to see through the camera as you texted so it didnt block your view.
