TUAW Review: ColcaSac sleeve for iPad

I've never understood people who keep their iPads bound up in cases. I get that they want to protect their iPads, but I never understood why they choose cases which just add to the bulk of the beautifully thin device. I've always been a sleeve guy myself -- something to keep the iPad scratch-free while transporting, yet which easily allows you to slide it out and hold it in your hands the way Jobs intended. That being said, I've searched for months for a good iPad sleeve. Most of the sleeves out there are very sterile and bland in appearance. Their designs are fit for mass production, but not much else.

My search for the perfect iPad sleeve ended when I discovered the ColcaSac iPad sleeve. ColcaSac is a small company in Salt Lake City, Utah that makes five different iPad sleeves, plus numerous iPhone and MacBook sleeves. Their designs are simple, yet different. The ColcaSac I have is the Hanakapiai model. It's got a soft cotton interior that gives the iPad's screen a nice wipe every time it's taken out of the sleeve, helping wipe away fingerprint smears. The outside of the sleeve is made of a beautiful basketweave hemp canvas that gives it a slightly rugged look. But one of the things I like most about the ColcaSac is the sleeve's outside pocket (which so many sleeves lack), perfect for carrying a USB cable and charger. And best of all, the iPad fits snugly into the sleeve. I've tried many iPad sleeves, and most of them don't hold the iPad tight. With the ColcaSac sleeve I can open the sleeve (it uses a Velcro fold to close), hold it upside down, and have the iPad slide out slowly.

Considering the design and quality materials they use, the $35 price tag for the ColcaSac is a steal. It's also a beautiful choice for iPad owners who want something aesthetically different than the usual offerings of iPad sleeves found on Amazon or in Apple Stores.

If you're looking for a great sleeve, I highly recommend this one. Broke? Can't afford one? Not to worry! The guys at ColcaSac have been good enough to provide a sleeve for one of our lucky TUAW readers. Check back in the next few days for the giveaway post!

Elegant and simple, and at the right price point. It's the Ugg boot of the iPad case world.

Looks nice. I can also recommend foofpod.com and fabrixcases.com - fabrix in particular are nice and hand stitched custom cases.

I do not mind leaving a 10 one tablet each round, I want to try something in my IPAD. If I went with my IPAD outside my house, I see that the line could add some bulk to the phone if you want to paste it in his pocket. IPAD works well for many.

So, you never understood why people use bulky cases, etc... It's quiet simple actually: The great majority of the people are just plain stupid, they refuse to actually use their thinking ability, and so let others to the thinking for them, that, in a democracy is the perfect recepee for tyranny. Apple work hard to make the device as thin as possible and then People act and transform it into the thickest phone in the planet with their cases. What's the point? But at the end, it's their stupidity of which they themselves collect it's fruits. Thank God we are out of that miserable huge sheeple pack.
What's the use, the need, the reason, the purpose of such?

I've gotta stop. I keep seeing these cool sleeves and getting them only to see one I like better. I now have three sleeves and a shoulder bag from Booq that's my fav for travelling. I would really like one of these but wifey said enough is enough. As usual she's right.

I've been using the apple case, as it's thinner than most others. This sleeve looks intriguing.

I've been using a Moshi iPouch for my iPhone 4, but these sleeves look interesting. The only problem I see is that the sleeve could add a little bulk to the phone if you wanted to stick it in your pocket. Works well for iPad though.

This is ideal and $35 is reasonable.

There's a really cool company called Hello Rewind (http://www.hellorewind.com/) that makes iPad sleeves (and other laptop sleeves as well) from recycled t-shirts; particularly, YOUR old t-shirts. The cool thing is that they help out victims of sex trafficking - you can check out their business model and more info on their website. Just about to order mine...

To Phil,
Thanks for the tip. I just went to the website and it looks like something I'd like to investigate further. I love the premise and the charitable contributions.

FYI, I love this particularly iPad sleeve by Colca, but I am seriously thinking about investing in a sleeve for my MacBook Pro. Thanks again for the tip.

I struggle between sleeve and case. I love my griffin sleeve. It is brown, simple and the strap acts as a way to pull the ipad out of the sleeve. It stays in nice and tight for travel. I love to read on my ipad (despite what everyone else says about how horrible it is) and holding it naked feels the best.

On the other hand, at work, I like the apple case. It turns my ipad into a portfolio and angles nicely for typing. I can quickly lay the cover flat behind the case or close it when not in use. It also gives it protection when I am just carrying it around in my hands.

So both work for me depending on the circumstances. To me the colcasac seems to bulky and not particularly good looking. I like a nice low profile sleeve that slides easily in and out of my backpack.
