Apple rumor roundup: iTV, next-generation iPod touch

It's a new week, and with that comes a new batch of Apple rumors. This time we've got more hints about the forthcoming Apple TV (or is it "iTV") and what could be a new iPod touch screen.

First, Digg co-founder Kevin Rose has been chatting up the new Apple TV. According to Rose, it will be launched in September and "change everything." He says that we can expect iOS apps, a la carte offerings from the major networks (goodbye, cable bill) and MobileMe picture and video sharing.

The whole thing will interact with a remote control app on other iOS devices. He's pretty much in keeping with Engadget's report. We're starting to feel quite secure that the future Apple TV will run iOS apps.

In other news, M.I.C Gadget has posted pictures of what it claims to be the front LCD and bezel for the 4th generation iPod touch. Labeled "Apple (c) 2010", the part bears a small hole near the top bezel that could conceivably allow a front-facing camera to peek through. It looks like the real deal to us. A front-facing camera on the iPod touch wouldn't be a surprise at this point.

There's your Apple rumor round up for Monday. More to come.

Interesting but no surprises with respect to the Touch. After all Jobs said FaceTime will be on tens of millions of devices and the only way that will happen is if many more devices hit the market real soon now. Actually I'm more interested to know if there are other real surprises coming. Possibly related to Liguid Metal's tech being used in the new Touch. Maybe an SD slot too.

As to iTV that will be very interesting. However it needs to be able to stream locally or have internal storage. Some of us are not blessed with fast internet connections.

I can't wait for the new Apple TV. I wonder will it be another set top box or an actual TV? After all, Apple make some awesome displays (albeit a tad expensive).

I'm guessing the new apple tv is why the remote app for the iPhone and iPad has not been updated. They're waiting to release a new edition that works with the new apple tv.

so if I facetime with this new touch, do I have to use a headset? or will there be a mic built into the device?

Built in mic to make face time use (and voip calls) more convenient among other things.

"Goodbye, cable bill" .... except for the part that brings you the high speed access required to use an Apple/iTV.... and to that end, unless new media partnerships are forged, this new device doesn't make it any easier to stop paying for cable TV. A-la carte media purchases are available aplenty at the moment.

Definitely interesting.
Most likely won't be called iTV. There are so many other names. iTelevision etc...

It won't be iTV as ITV is a TV station here in the UK - it'd cause customer confusion and would never be allowed

they can just call it iTV in the US and apple tv in the UK. or better yet, they call it iPod TV and then everyone calls it iTV just like they do with the iTouch.

I tell you, an iPod Touch with a Retina Display, 64gb of storage and a FaceTime camera is the perfect companion to my Droid X. Still have access to all of the great iOS apps (including Air Video, which I can't live without), while still keeping the phone and carrier that I choose.

Killer combination. I hope Apple makes it happen!

If the iPhone4 shortage doesn't end (here in Canada) before they release a 4th gen iPod Touch (with those specs) I'm going to probably get that instead of an iPhone.
