Bloomberg: Apple press event on Sept. 7
Yesterday, Bloomberg published a story about Apple's alleged plan to rent television shows through iTunes and, we assume, the Apple TV. The cost would be US$0.99, which is half off the purchase price of $1.99.
Bloomberg also mentioned that Apple will hold a press event on September 7th. That's likely, as Apple has refreshed the iPod line every year in September since its launch. Additionally, the "Buy a Mac, get an iPod touch for free" promo that Apple is currently running for students expires on September 7th. So expect new iPods.
The real question, as Engadget points out, is what else will be announced at the event? Is the TV rental option the end of the story or part of a larger service? Also, would the new Apple TV (or "iTV") be announced on the 7th as well? We'll know soon enough. Be sure to follow our coverage on the 7th (should the rumored event actually take place) for the latest news.

August 25 2010 at 2:15 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI have an original AppleTV too, but I have no problem trading it in in 2010 or 2011. I've gotten more than my money's worth out of it all these years and I'm ready for a nice upgrade. :)
Fingers crossed...
C'mon TV show subscriptions!!!! (don't wanna own 'em, just rent to watch)
The important question for me is: will this work on my 1st gen 40GB ATV? I am not buying another one so that is what I want to know.

August 25 2010 at 11:22 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyCould someone at the event ask about a white iPhone ETA update?
August 25 2010 at 11:02 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI was told the new ETA was end of 2010 just this past weekend.
August 25 2010 at 11:41 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySo, wait.
Let's say that the current 8GB Touch is discontinued, and the current-generation 32GB Touch is dropped to the entry-level ($199) price point. (I think that's a fair prediction).
If you're a student and wait until Sept 7th to order, will you be able to get the $200 rebate toward one of the new iPods, or get the 32GB for free, etc.?
Or will the event on the 7th be about iPods that won't be available until the next week?
Bork,
It's been my personal experience that Apple is very flexible when it comes to this kind of a thing. A friend ordered a MacBook once right before they refreshed the line. Perhaps because his hadn't yet shipped, they sent him the newly refreshed one instead of the one he had ordered (granted the refresh kept the price the same; they bumped the specs up as I recall). Also, we ordered a MacBook for a graduating relative and even though it was close to (but wasn't quite during) the promotional period, we were still able to get the "free" iPod touch. So they seem really cool about that kind of thing.
The thing that gripes me about this promotion is the time-frame. Twice in the past 2 years, myself and relatives have "chipped-in" together and given MacBooks as high-school graduation gifts which happens in May or June. But they don't do this promotion till closer to the fall when many of these sales have already happened. Perhaps that's why they wait; so they don't have to give away too many free iPods?
it will probably be Sept 8 because of the holiday
August 25 2010 at 10:23 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySept 6 is Labor Day...so no reason it can't be on Sept 7.
August 25 2010 at 10:30 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplySo maybe we'll finally see that Netflix iPhone app?! Seriously, wasn't that supposed to already be out by now?
August 25 2010 at 10:16 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyDude, that's the BBC trademarked logo.
August 25 2010 at 10:10 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyNot BBC lol, it's ITV it's a television channel in the UK. It's independent unlike the BBC they are competitors.
August 25 2010 at 10:34 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI hope there's a new AppleTV and it rocks.
I currently just use my MacBook hooked up to my TV but I'd love to reclaim my MacBook from my entertainment center. Netflix is fine but the content is always a season behind for shows. I grabbed a Hulu+ subscription but that's not all I was hoping for either.
