Dear Aunt TUAW: $1.39 iPad holder

Dear Aunt TUAW:

Behold the $1.39 iPad holder. It holds the iPad perfectly in both orientations. All of the iPad users in my office have one, and it's the best. It's very very stable, too.

Love and kissies,

Your nephew Joel

Dear Joel,

Auntie actually owns a fair number of these holders. They get used all the time for iPods and iPhones, but I can't really recommend them for the iPad. The Office Depot business card holder is just not stable enough. Auntie has had enough bad experiences while testing them to be deeply, deeply concerned about your choice of iPad stand.

These holders don't have enough back support -- and not having that back support is simply a recipe for disaster. Do you want to bear the cost of an accidental iPad plunge to the floor? That's what Auntie thought, too.

Auntie sticks with more supportive iPad stands (even inexpensive, homemade cardboard ones) and is much happier with the stability that a high back and solid footing offers.

Hugs,

Auntie T.

At walmart they have an 8" table top easel. works great and folds flat. there was an article here before on cheap stands and solutions that was good. and the website "displays to go" dot com has a lot of good options. business card holders work amazing for cell phones, ipods etc though. i like using one when watching slingplayer mobile.

I can't remember if I saw this idea on TUAW or elsewhere, but I use a Gorillapod--it makes an extremely sturdy iPad stand, and since I got it 40% off, it's way cheaper than most of the ready-made iPad stands (although not in the under-$5-range). Plus you can adjust it to any angle and use it upright, sideways, whatever.

A $2 holder is exactly what I want for my $800 iPad

How do we ask Aunt TUAW a question? Is there a specific link or is it the feedback section?

on another note my local office depot never seems to keep these in stock long enough

I keep my iPad in an Apple case (love it!) and simply hang it over an ancient metal copy stand - the kind you used to have next to a typewriter that held real paper. Since it hangs free, landscape, it is easy to attach a charging cable with no interference.

I bought a bunch of Plate stands from Gibson Holders but they were twice as expensive ($3) and do a great job holding my iPad at any angle I might want.

I'd be more inclined to trust a display stand for one of those priceless Dale Earnhardt plates than one for those $.02 business cards.

Miniature easels such as this one also do a great job of holding the iPad at any orientation in various angles and they are only $1.59:

Well I'm not being funny or anything, but if I were a journalist, I wouldn't recommend a business card holder to hold users' iPads under ANY fucking cirumstances, not even if it worked. I couldn't be bothered with the backlash of some idiot breaking their iPad while using one, then blaming my recommendations.

So while you kindly go and die in a fire, I'd like to take a second to say I love you Erica, and keep it up :)

I tried one of these and found it to be very unstable, with the iPad easily toppling over when touched in the wrong place.

You obviously don't know much if you think she works for an iPod stand manufacturer. LOL.
