More murmuring about 99 cent iTunes TV rentals

Well now. The previous rumor about 99 cent rentals for TV episodes on iTunes was just your average, but now that we know there's an Apple event just around the corner, it's time to start making hay out of all the chaff floating around. A source now tells the Wall Street Journal that Apple is pushing hard for a deal with Disney to nail down cheaper 48-hour rentals, presumably to come through iTunes and the revamped iTV service. Resistance to the deal is coming from TV companies (surprise, surprise), who are leery about putting too much content out through online services, fearing that people will leave their monthly cable bills behind if another service arises.

What's funny about that, of course, is that Apple sees that's already happening. Services like Hulu Plus and Netflix are already making cable customers rethink their monthly fees, and so Apple is finding itself with a limited amount of time to get in on the action. The Wall Street Journal says the company is pushing for agreements "before the new television season starts," but now that we know there's an event planned for September 1st, it's more likely Apple is trying to get agreements set up before the announcement. Of course, as Philip Elmer-DeWitt points out, the real economic tradeoff isn't between the $0.99 rentals and a more lucrative plan the studios come up with -- it's between Apple's proven iTunes-based economy and the free-range TV programming on BitTorrent.

And with its ties to Disney, odds are that Apple will definitely have enough to go forward, even if it doesn't have every channel signing on the dotted line just yet. So here's the question: if Apple does announce a new iTV, and a way to watch new television on demand right away, will you choose a system like that over whatever cable bill you're currently paying?

It's not a conflict of interest for both companies to profit from such a deal as well as the management of both. That is to all's mutual interest. It is a conflict of interest if it is better for the leadership financially but not the company.

99 cents is still too much. I know that sounds ridiculous. But if I consider all of the shows that I really enjoy watching there's about maybe 10 that I try to catch on a regular basis and if I can't I hulu it for free or find it online. With an average of around 18 episodes per season that's around $180 to watch my shows... that's insane and quite frankly won't fly. Give me a $15 ala carte with options to rent a few movies a month, and subscribe to the shows I like then sign me up. Until then it's not going to happen... sweet try though.

I do realize that even the $180 over the 4month season is still substantially less than cable... but... not that much less.. plus I don't get to watch sports among other things.

A combination of advertising subsidization, on demand and subscription a la carte service would get me sold... not .99 cent rentals.

We have two big screens in our house. One upstairs and one downstairs, each with their own HD TiVo units and cable TV.

My wife alone watches enough shows to make our bill soar past cable tv plus we wouldn't have all the channels or the Discovery Network, the History Channel, the Learning Channel, etc.

I WISH we had high def TV over the air hear in Seattle. Ok, we do for LOCAL channels but most of what I watch is on cable. If they have to add a laugh track to the program, I'm not watching it. It means the program is such a piece of **** that you have to be told when there was supposedly something funny said.

My wife *itches about the price of cable but there is nothing else out there that has the choices where the DVR doesn't suck. And yes, Windows Media Server sucks compared to TiVo. My sister-in-law has it and my wife is over there a lot too and complains to me about me. Why complain to me? I have no idea.

I would LOVE to ditch cable tv but again, it would cost us a lot more with iTV and we would get a lot less. No I don't work for the cable company.

99¢ for TV shows vs. Free BitTottent.
no contest, BT wins hands down.

now 99¢ movie rentals, yup sign me up.
I'd pay to watch 99¢ movie rentals, if I had:

A. The ability to watch for 48 hours as much as I wanted
B. Could also sync it to my iPod/ iPad where it would auto delete
in the 48hr period
C. Was all movies, even First Run ( ie. New Release Tuesday) stuff.

Otherwise, Redbox + the Corner 7Eleven stores have this beat over Cable
( and they thought a 28 day window would curb $1 rentals, they must be joking.)

And as far as the Apple TV itself, at this point it would have to beat the WD Media Player HD. I meant that is what Apple TV needs to be....

I hate to break it to you buddy, but the majority of HD content on air is 480p or 720p HD, not 1080p! ESPN, CBS, NBC, ABC, and Fox don't broadcast but a few special events/shows in 1080p. Not to mention, some of the over-the-air HD doesn't always come out perfect and can experience grainular looks on occasions. In other words, iTunes 720p looks just as good if not better than the majority of HD currently on cable. In fact, I have been using iTunes to buy and rent HD movies for a couple years and have nothing but good reviews of the picture/sound quality.

Quite honestly, I think my biggest hangup is watching live sports. But with espn3.com and Justin.tv I'm starting to worry about that a little less.

Well, I'm already considering dropping both the cable and Tivo bills. This would be the final nail in the coffin for a business model whose demise I eagerly await.

People who watch live sports would disagree. I don't, so I don't give a crap about that. Good riddance to bad (cable) rubbish. I can't wait to bid it farewell.

I might be interested depending on the actual details and pricing. I would be highly motivated if Apple could some how crack the lock on NFl games!
