Oh, Plex. You tease!

All sorts of buzz in the blogosphere this afternoon after Plex, makers of a respected Mac-based digital media center application updated their blog with a cryptic hint that seems to point to next Wednesday's Apple event.
Plex provides a centralized way to access your media library from a simple TV interface -- think FrontRow on steroids. Many Mac mini-based media centers have been built around Plex.
So does Plex's post add weight to "Apple TV" refresh rumors? It certainly tantalizes.
Thanks, Robert
Update: It's Plex Nine! Rewritten from the ground up, offering a better organized underlying architecture.

Screenshots on the Plex web site indicate that they are *still* using a unlicensed version of H&FJ's Gotham as one of the user interface fonts.
Maybe the project is too small to make it onto H&FJ's radar, or maybe they just don't care. As for me, I'm a little peeved as I paid a bundle for Gotham a while back.
For evidence, download Plex and "show package contents." Browse to Plex.app/Contents/Resources/Plex/skin/MediaStream/fonts. The files are called Title.ttf and TitleCaps.ttf.
The fonts have had their internal names changed to "fluid" and "fluid caps," but if you examine the glyphs, you'll see the Hoefler Type Foundry logo instead of the glyph that in many fonts is the  character.
I'm sure this has much more to do with Boxee having just released an update than Apple's upcoming presentation. Do the Boxee people and Plex people compete? I'm guessing so. When I saw the Boxee update, I hoped Plex's announcement would be right around the corner.

I can't wait.
Maybe plex will be an app on the new rumored itv.

If the writer of said "article" sought any background info, she would know this update has been in the works, there is no "cryptic" message to be found. It's obvious. Plex 9 has been announced, has been previewed, and on 1 september, will be released.
Baseless rumormongering.
What would apple use it for? It isn't QuickTime based. Apple isn't going to switch to mplayer for it's media center software. It can't even playback videos from the iTunes store. I don't think that is suppose to change in .9 either. The only reason to buy plex would be to buy the name, eliminate a competitor or higher the developers. Apple's brand is stronger than plex's, and boxe and xbmc would still be out there as competitors. I guess they could want the developers. Plex has been more appleish than xbmc or boxe. If it were bought then we wouldn't see plex anymore. It would have a major rewrite on the backend and frontend. It may just use some of the same ideas. The only thing that makes me think it is even the least bit possible is that Elan has commented on it, but he could just be laughing at our speculations.
August 26 2010 at 8:34 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyUm, I'm pretty sure Plex is just releasing the long-awaited version 0.9 - just read the Plex site and user comments. Why is everyone speculating that this has something to do with the Apple event?
August 26 2010 at 6:13 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyCan Plex play content purchased on the iTunes Store?
August 26 2010 at 5:58 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThey DEFINITELY just picked that date to mess with people.
Plex is great, but it's not something Apple would pick up.
