Apple introduces 4th gen iPod touch with camera

FaceTime. It isn't just for iPhone any more. Apple has just introduced a new generation of iPod touch with an improved chip (the same A4 that powers the iPad and the iPhone 4), a better display (the iPhone 4's double-resolution Retina display), and a built-in, front-facing camera that introduces FaceTime video conferencing capabilities.
This is a hefty refresh for an already great device, providing lots of new features that really expand the way consumers can use the device in their day-to-day lives. If you can't walk away from your Blackberry, the latest generation iPod touch units bring nearly all of the iPhone magic to a Wi-Fi only platform.
Preorders start today, and they'll be shipping within a week, well in time for the Christmas season. Prices start at $229 for the 8GB version.

who cares about the stupid camera its a just a ipod 4 music stuff the camera :(
even if it has a camera if you dont like it buy the old one withoust a camera
Okay, the "hardware" differences I've noticed so far iPhone 4 vs iPod Touch 4G:
iPhone's dimensions 115.2 Ã 58.6 Ã 9.3 mmi (HÃWÃD)
iPod's dimensions 110 Ã 58 x 7.1 mm (HÃWÃD)
iPhone's weight 137g
iPod's weight 101g
iPhone has a phone
iPhone has takes 5MP stills, iPod has takes 0.7MP stills
iPhone has flash at the rear camera
iPhone has 512Mb RAM, iPod has 256Mb RAM
iPhone has a second microphone for noise cancelling, iPod has one
That's about it :D
I am a bit dissapointed that there is no flash, and lower quality camera, but in all honesty, here the thing:
-They probably made a lower quality camera to keep cost down. I'm sure people would have still bought it at a higher price with a better camera, but it could also cut back on customers.
-With any camera at ALL, this opens up the use of SO many more apps useable for the ipod touch, plus, no more taking pics with my phone, sending to email, and saving through my ipod. (yea too lazy to use a real camera)
-With the many added features, it remains the SAME PRICE as the previous model! This is quite amazing if you ask me. Sure, they overprice things, but its what we as consumers have to deal with.
GPS would have been great... not only for geo tagging, but to use it as a navigation device. it would have made the buying decision so easy! âeven for 30$ more or soâ
but if you wanna buy the standalone GPS accessories (like the GPS car stand from... tomtom? or something) that's 100$ right there, plus 60$ for the software. And we motorcycle riders can't use the available GPS stands.
well, I guess it still make more sense getting a 4.3" GPS unit for what they are going for, nowadays... but I'm almost out of excuses to buying the Touch! and I really kinda want one! :/
I am just dissapointed at not only the still picture quality, but it only says "tap to control exposure". Correct me if im wrong bit is there no focus control on it? Kudos to apple for adding cameras at all, but i just wish there was focus control.

September 02 2010 at 12:02 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyAnyone know what "compatible third-party apps" allow the iPod touch to "stay connected to Wi-Fi when asleep so you can receive incoming VoIP calls and notifications"? Any SIP/Gizmo compatible ones?
Also, does any standard BlueTooth keyboard connect, or only special "Apple approved" ones?
I kinda wish Apple would bump up the 802.11n on it's mobile devices to 5mhz, rather than 2.4mhz only. I run my Airport Extreme in 5mhz only and don't want to compete with neighbor's B/G signals on the limited number of 2.4mhz channels.
I know when you jailbreak you can download a little app that will keep WiFi on all the time. I cant remember the name, sold my touch a while back. A little looking through google and you should find it. It does drain the battery really fast though.
September 02 2010 at 1:37 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHow can the rear camera take HD videos, yet only take 960x720 images? Isn't both from the same lens?
Could you just take a video, then a screenshot from the video and get a higher resolution image?
high-definition video is 1280x720... at 4:3 ratio it's 960:720

September 01 2010 at 4:43 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThat would be nice, but it is a software thing. The 3rd gen was dissected by iFixit and they found an FM chip. I would imagine the 4th gen will also have that chip. iOS 5 maybe?
