Apple updates the iPod shuffle

At today's press event, Steve Jobs announced a full revamp of the iPod line. The new iPod shuffle is smaller than the 2nd generation device and brings back something that many users missed with the previous model. Specifically, buttons!

The new shuffle has a familiar-looking click wheel on the small postage-stamp shaped model that was introduced a few years ago. It will hold 15 hours of music, is available in 4 colors and sells for US$49. As of this writing, availability has not been announced. The iPod shuffle, and all models introduced today, will go on sale (pre-orders) today, with expected delivery next week.

We'll have more on this and the rest of today's announcements all day long.

This new shuffle from Apple is very attractive in looks. I like the color options it provides. The sound is, as always, very good and clear. The only thing I wished Apple could have done is increased memory to 4 GB at least. Still its a worth a buy.

Apple iPod Shuffle 2010 (Fourth Generation), is a smarter and redesigned sequel to Apple's entry level iPod containing the best features compared to the prior versions.Restored five-button control scheme is amplified by new VoiceOver and battery level button, while support for remote controls remains. I love this model because having the volume and play controls on the actual unit is much nicer than having to be constrained to specialty headphones that have the controls on the cord, which if you actually want a comfortable pair you have to buy from a 3rd party, which ultimately adds to your cost.

A tiny bit of my faith in Apple has been restored along with those buttons.

Steve did not say it will hold 15 hours of music, he said it will PLAY 15 hours of music, as in battery life.

They *said* the full iPod line, but the iPod Classic is left untouched. Methinks the writing's on the wall for that one.

I think they nailed the iPod shuffle form factor with the "original" square design. The step to the fat toothpick with no controls made no sense. In this case, I'm glad they went backwards.

The iPod nano just has me going WTF?

I imagine Jobs was pretty pissed off about this, but the dollar signs won him over.

The problem was dealing with the headphones. They wanted to use the "stock" headphones with the long cord and put the buttons on the cord, but that locked out people from replacing the headphones on the "cheap" model. Also, having 30" of cord with a 2" player (and no buttons) was silly. There were a few attempts to attach the shuffle directly to things like wrap-around headphones joggers (no hanging cords) use but those weren't that common to find at the store.
