iPod touch outselling PSP and DS in games, not systems

During this morning's event, Steve Jobs tossed out the factoid that the iPod touch was trouncing traditional handheld gaming, claiming that the system had sold more than Nintendo and Sony's portables combined. If, like us, you thought that meant Apple had sold more devices than traditional game makers, then Steve was wrong -- he mentioned in the same event that Apple has shipped 120 million iOS devices, and while that's very impressive, it's not quite as big as the 125 million Nintendo DS systems the Japanese company had sold around the world as of January. That doesn't even count the 62 million PSP units Sony has sold worldwide. In terms of gaming devices sold, Apple has a long ways to go.

But Steve can't have been that wrong -- he said that the iPod touch had sold more than Nintendo or Sony combined. He can't be off by over 60 million, right? It's more likely that he meant software sales. There have been about 718 million DS games sold in the system's history, and about 252 million games sold on the PSP. And there have been 6.5 billion downloads of iOS apps so far (with 1.5 billion of those being game and entertainment apps). When you compare the numbers that way, yes, Apple is far outselling Nintendo and Sony in terms of game sales. But of course, iOS apps tend to be much cheaper than Sony and Nintendo's software (if not free), and gamers could probably argue all day about the difference in average quality of the two platforms.

Either way, Steve was stretching the truth a little bit on that stat. Apple has done a terrific job making inroads on portable gaming (some of it even without planning to do so), but the Cupertino company has a little way to go yet before it starts really competing with the established console manufacturers.

Update: A few commenters suggest that Apple has sold more iPod touches than both other systems combined recently, as in the last quarter or so. But the other two devices are a few years older than the oldest iPod touch, so that doesn't seem like a great comparison either. Again, Apple has made really incredible strides into handheld gaming, but the company isn't quite overwhelming its competitors in this market yet.

The statistics could go many different ways, but the interpretation I prefer is the Revenue from iPod Touch Game purchases vs the Revenue from PSP and DS Game purchases.

The number one selling point for DS's a year ago was weak copy protection, the R4 card reader and BitTorrent. The only selling point for PSPs was the ability to play old PSOne games. I can't say what the number one selling point for iPod Touches is, but I could list the top 4;

* Compatibility with the iTunes Ecosystem; iPhones, iPods and TV's.
* Ease of Installation of New Games.
* (more) Open Developer Environment == More interesting games.
* One great screen compared with the PSP's mediocre screen and the DS's 2 pathetic screens.

An alternate interpretation of the data, which includes iPhones as iPod Touch Gaming devices, does blow PSP+DS numbers out of the water. Most people I know with iPhones use them mainly for games, with Communication only being a secondary use.

Love the iTouch...but I have to say, this is bad Apple press again. In my opinion, this makes Job's look foolish. "We've sold (x) amount of units more than the DS and PSP." While the PSP DOES have browsing capabilities (and music...even if it's not that great of a UI) The DS (earlier generations, new one now has browser, doesn't it?) Is A gaming system. You can't really justify this when so many apps range from free-$3.99 games, as opposed to how much DS games cost (Because they're REAL games. Much rather have one over an iTouch for actual gaming.) This isn't PS3 vs 360. I dunno. Just seems like Apple's letting a lot of press get to their heads and now they're throwing these statements around that are just whacky. Since when did Apple become so childish? :/

The bad Apple press is coming from idiot bloggers who apparently can't read at a third-grade level. Take the two recent negative headlines (this one, and "iOS 4.1 will not fix proximity sensor"). In both cases a perfectly reasonable Apple statement was willfully misconstrued so as to create a sensationalist article out of nothingness. Is it any wonder Jobs has stated concern about real journalists becoming extinct?

By "Real Games" do you mean the ones played by a handful of introverted hard-core gamers, or ones played by real people in the real world, who socialise.

Seriously, the DS games that are popular are the ones that are as pathetic as online Flash Games. PSP's can play more advanced games, like racing car games, but so can the iPod Touch.

If by "Real Games" you mean games based in a physical reality, like flying an AR.Drone or other remote controlled Robot, or playing LARPs or partaking in Geocaching, the DS is completely useless and the PSP is almost useless.

Apple always not the first one, but the best one. Apple was not the first maker of mp3 player , but it's the No.1 top the long list of mp3 gadgets. Apple never made smartphone, even mobile phones 5 years ago, but its iPhone is most welcome smartphone in the market. And iPad start to build a tablet PC market....
I believe iPod Touch could change the gaming world. Mmmmm, Maybe.

I think you should watch it again, because I took it to mean that they are currently selling more iPod touches than Sony PSP and Nintendo DS combined.

If Epic Citadel is any indication of what's to come, I'd say the PSP and DS are kind of screwed.

(No, I don't work for them.)

I'll say it again Mike, Jobs is referring to life of product. In other words in the time frame since the iPod Touch was introduced to the current date (its life of product), it has outsold the other two products. This is pretty standard when companies make comparisons like this and the various products have different life spans. Just check the numbers.

Knowing Apple, Steve may have refered to sales in the US.

Obviously he was referring to the most recent quarter for which data is available, during which the iPod Touch did outsell the combined PSP/DS aggregate. You can argue that he could have been more specific, but I'd note that he never said the iPod Touch has sold more overall units, but rather that it is outselling those devices currently.

Steve stated that iOS has outsold both Nintendo and Sonys systems combined. I believe that he meant there have been more iOS games sold than Nintendo and Sonys handheld games. Remember that most Nintendo and Sony games are 3rd party (much like iOS) bet I believe he is trying to compare apples to oranges.

Incorrect. Jobs never said "outsold", he said "outsells". But, hey, who cares about actually parsing sentences correctly when you have a chance to accuse Apple of lying again?
