iHome reveals first AirPlay wireless speaker system
iHome, makers of iPhone and iPod accessories, is the first to announce an AirPlay compatible wireless speaker system. So far, the details are slim, but what we do know is that it will incorporate Apple's new AirPlay technology, have a rechargeable battery, and be available for the holiday season! In related news, Apple's official AirPlay website reveals a lineup of other featured partners who are incorporating the AirPlay technology. JBL, Marantz, B&W, and Denon have also signed up, but as of yet, no further information is available.
In case you missed it, our own Richard Gaywood did a great piece on why he's looking forward to Airplay. If streaming music, video, and picture tickles your fancy, check it out here.
We'll keep you posted on any further Airplay developments as they happen.

The thing about Airplay is that it supports lossless audio formats (like ALAC, AIFF). Which opens up the HiFi market to streaming. I look forward to some real, new, amplifier and/or integrated amp/LS combos at the high end of the market. It's about time that iTune started to provide non lossy files ( ALAC) and pushed the technology up from 16bit/44.1kHz to 24bit/96kHz also.
The recovery of the digital music business depends on advancing technology, not reducing it as it has done with MP3, AAC and worse still streaming. Recordings today are highly compressed just to get the music across in these lossy formats. What we need it to move back to more lossless, open, simple recordings and delivery by better technology.
I was about to drop some large bills on Sonos, but this looks like a cheaper solution that is A) just as easy to use and B) uses Macs and A/V items I already have. I'm excited!

Does anyone know where to find the technical specs for AirPlay?
September 06 2010 at 12:42 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyNevermind, there's a wikipedia page up now: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AirPlay
September 06 2010 at 12:44 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe specs are for AirTunes not AirPlay in the wikipefia page. I had to edit it to remove stuff that made nonsense.
September 06 2010 at 3:52 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI don't get heat the big deal about airplay is when you could just use Bluetooth speakers. There's really no difference.
September 06 2010 at 10:28 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe difference is that you can have more than one set of speakers play the same "stream" at the same time, for instance several sets in different rooms or satellite speakers that don't need cables between themselves. Bluetooth is peer-to-peer.
September 06 2010 at 10:37 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyYou can stream stereo music to multiple bluetooth devices? That's news to me. Also, I don't think you'll be streaming HD video across to a bluetooth device any time soon either.
September 06 2010 at 10:51 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI'm pretty excited about airplay. I've recently set up a new HiFi system with the plan of ditching the CD player and just streaming all the music from my iMac via AirTunes. The ability to cut out the middle man (computer?) and just use my iPhone is great. November can't come soon enough.
Also, I'm hoping it means the must needed update for the Remote app is imminent. A first party app without retina display support is ridiculous.
So this is a box with AirTunes built in?
