First generation Apple TV owners: checkout aTV Flash

Like many first generation Apple TV owners, I was sad to see that we were being left behind with the advent of the new Apple TV. That said, I have no plans to get rid of my original Apple TV. In fact, Apple's decision spurred me to take action I have been thinking about for a long time: installing aTV Flash.

aTV Flash is a set of programs that add features to your Apple TV. It adds SSH/FTP access, allows you to use an external hard drive for additional storage, adds Boxee support, and much more. One of the big additions is the ability to watch AVI, MP4, MOV, WMV, and DVD (VIDEO_TS) files. You can even install Firefox and use the AppleTV as a web browser.

I've actually owned the aTV Flash software for over a year but had never gotten around to using it, because after each Apple TV update I'd have to wait for the software to be updated again. aTV Flash updates come out fairly regularly, but it was just the hassle of the process that made me averse to doing it. Now that Apple has declared the product to be essentially End Of Life, I figured there was no better time to start.

Installing aTV Flash couldn't be any simpler. You simply download the installer (available for Mac or Windows), and it installs the aTV Flash software onto a USB flash drive. Unplug your Apple TV, plug in the aTV Flash formatted flash drive, reboot the Apple TV, and wait for it to finish. The whole process took only a few minutes. After being updated, the Apple TV interface looks mostly the same, except there are some new menu options to choose from.

The aTV Flash software sells for $50 and includes a year of updates. They are planning to keep developing additional features for the first generation Apple TV units, including Last.fm support. When I first looked into this about a year ago, there were apparently ways to do much of what aTV Flash offers by yourself if you had the time and inclination to find the instructions on a variety of websites. Personally I found it well worth it to pay for an easy way, but if you are looking to save some money, you might take a look via Google to see what's available; it may have gotten easier since I last checked.

DO NOT BUY ATVFLASH. I purchased atvflash about a year ago and ever since then have been unable to play many formats. Their customer care team sucks and do not even have the decency to actually figure out what's happening, let alone fixing the problem. Since 1 year i have documented evidence on mail that all they do is dodge the issue and never come back with a fix. atvflash makes your apple tv slow and retarded. Yea you can watch divx and xvid files, but many formats are still not supported.

For all of you who download movies through torrents that have ac3 audio coding, will NOT be able to watch that movie on your Apple TV with atvflash. The video will play BUT the audio will be a loud stutter. The same movie will play perfectly fine on my mac. I've emailed them about this issue numerous times and they've still done nothing about it. My 1 year membership with them has ended and i guess they were just buying time so they don't need to deal with the issues.

To all of you who have an older Apple TV. DO NOT waste your money on atvflash. Their team needs to learn to listen to customers and fix these most basic issues before putting a product out there. There are free methods in which you can get other formats playing on your apple tv, so just google around and you'll see a bunch of free options. My appeal to all of you, do not buy this product, it's a complete waste of money. If any of you have any specific queries, please feel free to email me on zarulzarul@gmail.com and i'l be happy to answer your questions.

Cheers - Zarul.

All I want to do is stream Netflix on my AppleTV.
Seems impossible?
Apple won't update the old box with the new ATV features.
Boxee has an app, but only for mac, not ATV.
aTV even says in their faq it would be flash/browser based and is unusable...not really sure what $50 buys you over boxee/patchstick that I've been running for years.

Maybe I should sell it and buy a new ATV. But I wouldn't even get half of its $350 price.

Just reading about Google TV, which sounds like it will take significant strides to merging TV and the Internet -- easy program search and scheduling plus full web access to perform most of the functions you do on a computer. It sounds cool. And it sounds like it's moving in the right direction. Why doesn't Apple do the same thing with its TV product using Safari?

If they can get content providers to come along. Other things I've read suggest as much -Google's business is advertising, the content provider's business is ultimately advertising-based, will the two find enough common ground to play nice or will Google swallow their business?

I've used aTV Flash and I have to say I'm impressed. Yes it's $50 which is not free, but it does many things which are just not possible with the free google version. Not to mention the hours of tinkering it will save you.

Care to provide any more details? As far as the 'hours of tinkering', installing boxee/xbmc/ssh/etc with atvusbcreator is a one step process, and it takes about 10 minutes. From what I've seen of atvflash, the install process is exactly the same...

I guess it depends on what you want to do. If you want to use XBMC or Boxee, the google version is fine. I prefer to stay in the normal Apple TV menus and stream my DVDs from my NAS. It also looks like I can have iTunes sync to an external drive, which is a nice option to have should I need more space for music, purchases etc.

In my opinion both apps work well for their intended uses.

yeah you could atvflash, yeah you could stick in a Crystal HD card.
Or, you could just get a PS3.
It plays back HD files with flawless smoothness and colour accuracy, unlike the modded ATV (even with the HD card).
OK so you'll need to convert the odd file when you upload it with PS3 media server, but NOTHING handles video like a PS3 - NOTHING.
No hacking your ATV, no waiting for a HD card from asia, no hassle and you can play games, browse the net etc etc etc
I have both by the way, I'd sell my atv (with hd card etc) IF it was worth anything.

Has there been a decent dnla client plugin yet or something that actually works well for defining samba shares. When I did this before (multiple times) nothing worked properly.. Nico was the closest then, but it's been about a year since I worked with it.
