In Brief: Amazon tips hand on Microsoft Office release date
Computerworld points to an October 26 ship date for Microsoft Office 2011, based on Amazon's page updates indicating the 10/26 availability -- the products have since been switched back to "sign up to be notified" pre-release mode.
Gregg Keizler's piece also reiterates the discount options for buying Office 2008 and saving on Office 2011; by purchasing the 2008 versions now, buyers can get $25 or $50 off versus the purchase price of the next version.
We expect to hear more about Office 2011 features and fancy bits over the next few weeks.
[9to5mac rang us up to say they actually posted this at 11:58pm on Sept. 9, 2010. Thanks!]

I brought a new computer and had the Microsoft Office Trial now it has expired and I went and brought the original Microsoft Office CD. I uninstall the trial and put in the CD and install it normal process but then when I restart and open it up they tell me that that I need to buy it online.

Launch Word in less than 3 minutes and I'll be impressed.
September 10 2010 at 11:54 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyBeen using beta version and for the FIRST TIME EVER, I'm actually please with office on the Mac. Particularly Outlook (entourage was the bane of the earth...). Haven't had to boot the VM since I installed it. Happy Dance!
September 10 2010 at 3:33 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI have never needed Office but this post is wrong about the $25-50 discount. If you buy Office 2008 now you can get an upgrade to 2011 for FREE.

Chris, the savings refers to the lower cost of the 2008 version, followed by a free upgrade to 2011, versus buying 2011 outright.

Cleve, thanks for the heads-up. I see you also pointed it out to Computerworld; at the time I wrote this post, Keizler's article did not say anything about 9to5 spotting the date.
Neil, that Techmeme item points to the 9to5 story.
These icons look like animal balloons. Horrible.
September 10 2010 at 2:14 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThey're better than the current ones, but they still fail to observe a single one of Apple's guidelines for iconography on Mac OS X.
A non-utility application is supposed to consist primarily of the media you're creating. A text document, a spreadsheet, etc. If there's a tool involved (a pen, a laser pointer), it can be included, resting atop the media at an angle. The icon, as a whole, should be rendered from a perspective as if you were looking down at them on a desk.
The Office suite is well-recognized, so MS is free to do what they like, but it would be nice to see the Mac Business Unit create some Mac-like icons for once.
One of the new features that I LOVE (and can't live without in my current job) is the addition of pivot tables in Excel :)
The layouts in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are much more refined and match very closely to those in the Office 2010 (PC).
Overall, at least with the beta, I am extremely happy with the new versions and functionality.
