TomTom offers free car kit adapter for iPhone 4

tomtom adapter for iphone 4Attention, folks who purchased the TomTom car kit for their iPhone 3G or 3GS, only to upgrade to a won't-fit-quite-right iPhone 4: you're in luck. TomTom is now providing a free adapter for the aforementioned car kit that allows an iPhone 4 to fit properly.

Apparently the adapter is simply a piece of plastic that one sticks into place over a spot at the bottom of the dock. It's included in the kit packaging from September 1, though if you bought a car kit before then, you can claim your adapter from TomTom for free.

The TomTom car kit retails for about $120. Obviously, to make full use of the TomTom car kit at all, you'll want to have the $40 iPhone app to go along with it.

I found that if you use a dock extender you can dock your iPhone with the bumper on. I got mine at gadgetboost.com http://www.gadgetboost.com/products/DockExtender-Boost-iPhone-iPad-iPod-Dock-Extender.html Definitely solved that issue! SF

The dock extender will work to connect the bottom of the iPhone 4 to the TomTom carkit, but what about the top? Doesn't the top of the iPhone then go over the top clasp of the TomTom? Or are you saying it doesn't need to be anchored at the top?

The iphone 4 in a bumper won't fit into the car kit, even with the piece of plastic. The height of the iPhone is too great with the bumper in place to fit in the mount. You'll need to remove your bumper each time you dock your phone.

I'm not sure how much it really matters, but this article might give some readers the wrong impression in regard to what type of GPS application you need to take advantage of the Tomtom car kit. Pretty much any iPhone GPS application (Navigon etc) will get an enhanced GPS signal with the Tomtom kit. I'm not saying that anyone should get the car kit, just that you don't need the tomtom app to use it.
