Mmmm... new flavors of DODOcase iPad case are available

Remember the DODOcase? It was perhaps the first iPad case that we reviewed, a beautiful handmade Moleskine-like case made with traditional bookbinding methods. The case single-handedly revived the art of bookbinding in San Francisco, and it's sparked a handful of competitors.

For most of the product's short life so far, the interior paper in the case has been red. Now the company will be providing a full spectrum of 11 colors (including red) to purchasers. Craig Dalton, co-founder of DODOcase, sent us a bunch of glamor shots of the cases that we've collected into a gallery to make you drool.

An interesting note about the bookplate inside the cover of every DODOcase. Dalton noted that "We introduced the bookplate after we realized we couldn't possibly hand sign every one that went out the door. We signed the first 1000, then moved to a printed library card for another 1000 or so, then moved to the bookplate. We are passionate about the history of book binding and were really jazzed when someone pointed us towards the bookplate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bookplate). I loved the idea of creating something that people could personalize with their name, but also feel like a part of the history of the book."

If you have a hand-signed DODOcase sheltering your iPad, consider yourself very lucky.

Yeah, the Portenzo is a really solid product. Check utube for unboxing video from a guy with a dead dodo.

I got a Portenzo case, the snug corners are genius - I had trouble removing the iPad, but using the dock connector and plugging it in, I wiggled it and the iPad came out of the hot corners but it's still snug fitting when you use it again!

I chose Portenzo because it was in orange, and the Dodocase had limited colours; had no customs fees to the UK (fab!) but did have to twitter them to ask about the shipping status! Otherwise, fantastic product!

I have been using the Pad and Quill case for the iPad and iPhone and the cases work great.

So they took the same thing they already had and changed the color of paper in it. Neat.

I just don't like the idea of the elastic. Stuff like that wears out so quickly. That's why I love the Pad and Quill case (for the iPad; the iPhone version has the same elastic) since the iPad one has a latch.

I was really lusting over the Dodo case but all of the various complaints about straps and corner-pads gave me pause.

Then I saw the Portenzo case and it is clearly a knock-off but with some (seemingly) smarter design ideas. Unfortunately, I can't find anyone one online that has done an actual review of the case.

Maybe TUAW should get one of those and let me know which to spend my money on.

I just received my DoDo case, backing not adhered to frame, after 4 days the corner pads are falling off and the name plate sticker is crooked.

These cases are NOT well made, for the price I am not satisfied - great idea, looks great, but obviously no quality control.

Customer service gave me some 'this is normal for hand crafted work' rationalization.

In hind site I would say not worth the money or the really long wait for delivery.

I got confirmation from Craig Dalton himself that they are working on the color accuracy of their order selector. He said the charcoal is a very dark gray, not brown. He also said the lifestyle photos of the new colors are the best way to see the colors accurately.

Love my Dodocase, have had it for a couple of months now with no problems. I'm using the new replacement corner pads which are much better and hold the ipad very securely where it won't even fall out when shaking it and holding it upside down. The only problem with the new corner pads, is the first set, I just used the adhesive backing that comes with them, but within a few days they were peeling off, I had a second set, so I removed the adhesive with lighter fluid, and crazy glued them to the bamboo, now they are stuck for good! My bookplate is on the inside flap like shown in the photo, not behind the iPad, which wouldn't really make sense since you can't see it. I am jealous of the new colors though!
