Consumer Reports app 'not recommended'

You'd think that Consumer Reports, judges of all things good and bad in autos, electronics, frozen food, etc. (not to mention smartphones) could get its own app right.

After a late August update, the free app has more crashes than a bad day at the Indy 500. Want to see the problem? Just tap on "Electronics," which is one of the categories at the bottom of the screen. Kaboom! I thought it was just me, but everyone I know with an iPhone 4 has had the same problem, and the iTunes store reader feedback is overflowing with bad reviews and complaints about this bad behavior. Your mileage my vary, but the bug is pretty widespread.

After almost a month, Consumer Reports should have gotten a problem like this one sorted out, but there it sits. The issues with the app have given it a measly one star rating. It might be a good idea for the company to issue a recall, or at the very least, just fix the app. For now, this stinker is "not recommended."

Huh... despite all it's coverage of it's parent company, The Consumerist hasn't posted about this problem yet! This sounds like decidedly anti-consumer behavior, even if it is unintentional. I think as proper recourse for this horrible gaffe, I should be given an iPhone with a proper, functional version of this app on it!

UPDATE: it's non longer at the app store. Probably they're pulling it out or updating it.

If you hold the Consumer Reports app wrong, it gives lower ratings.

Consumer Reports should come back with "you're holding the app wrong". :)

I can sorta understand your linkbaiting with the title and tone of this post, but you missed one BIG issue:

iOS 4 updates broke a LOT of apps. Not all, but a lot. ANd quite a few of your "top-rated" apps cause my (jailbroken) 3G to convulse and show me the pineapple.

The other things you could've remembered - 1star reviews are par for course from Apple fanboys for apps that dare criticize Cupertino. The other balance of negative reviews could be form those who don't fully understand the phrase "well-regulated market."

Also, are Apple's new guidelines - "don't whine about us in the Press" - (that's just the snarky phrasing, not Apple's, right?) preventing an update from being approved?

DId you even seek comment from Consumer Reports? Or the App Store approval dept.?

It's amazing that they would release an app for such a subpar phone that they just "can't recommend". Consumer Reports is full of $hit.

You do realize this app also works on the iPod Touch, iPad, and every iPhone prior to the iPhone 4, don't you?

All of those, and most other Apple products, are CR recommended (I believe).

Do you disagree with the facts and conclusion of the article?

If Consumer Reports (and their fans) can't stand the heat they should get out of the kitchen.

I think it's great to give them a taste of their own medicine.

I think the article was quite reasonable and restrained.

You're right, we should have lied and said it was awesome. Because that's a lot better for our "cred" /sarcasm

Ah, you gotta love the irony. Reports doesn't recommend the iPhone4 and the Reports app can't be recommended for the iPhone4. LOL
