Xsilva LightSpeed Mobile brings Apple Store-like checkout to any store
Xsilva Systems has been at the forefront of Mac Point-of-Sale systems for a while with their LightSpeed software. Now, they're bringing another member of the Apple hardware family into the LightSpeed fold. LightSpeed Mobile is designed to extend LightSpeed away from a traditional cash register, by using an iPod touch and Linea-Pro "sled" to scan bar codes and swipe credit cards from anywhere in the store. If this sounds familiar, it's because the hardware is the same that is currently used in Apple retail stores, although they use a proprietary app.
For existing LightSpeed customers, LightSpeed Mobile is an additional US$1,299 (iPod touch not included). Complete turnkey retail solutions that include the necessary software, the Linea-Pro scanner, and a full POS hardware kit (receipt printer, cash drawer, and bar code scanner) start at $3,649. If you already have the necessary hardware and software, you can purchase LightSpeed Mobile in the App Store for just $19.99.
A couple of fun videos showing LightSpeed Mobile in action follow on the next page.
Thanks to Brad for the tip

October 28 2010 at 12:53 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI would love to find a site that uses Xsilva Webstore, I am looking at buying their web store package. but would love to find a real world website and get some feed back.
Thanks in Advance
Xsilvas Webstore is at first glance a simple and elegant system that give merchants. But it is much much more with a few customizations....
The webstore allows merchants to offer their accurate inventory to the world. Being able to have accurate inventory counts from your store always displaying on your website opens you up to wide range of online marketing methods that can be achieved very efficiently with having the accurate inventory counts online. I've personally developed some marketing tools to harness the power of having live online inventory and allow the automated generation of shopping comparison product feeds for sites like bizrate, ebay, pricegrabber, google base, slybuyer.com, shopzilla and even amazon that interface seamlessly into xsilvas webstore.
I've also customized the look and feel of the webstore for various different markets:
http://www.ridemteverest.com
http://www.hipbaby.com/store/
http://shop.sharpuniquegifts.com/
As you can see there are no limitations to the design of the xsilva webstore and it can be designed to look and feel any way you require. With the introduction of Lightspeed Mobile to lightspeeds already powerful POS system. It seems that xsilva is once again on the front of cutting edge technology and their webstore is a direct representation of it as well.
What's great about Xsilva is that they HAVE an online forum and they don't go through and delete non-flattering posts like other companies might.
Yes, there are a lot of posts about issues with the software, but they are by a relatively few number of people. Compared to the number of installs, it's a pretty decent track record. Look at the other POS software out there and you'll be hard pressed to find an open forum that discusses problems and solutions. But if you google search other companies, you will find that their software can be problematic as well.
If you look on the site http://xsilva.com/mobile you will see that the Lightspeed Mobile upgrade for existing customers shows a graphic of Lightspeed User Upgrade + Mobile Hardware Kit + Support & Upgrades Extension for $1299.
It follows on to say "LightSpeed Mobile requires LightSpeed 3.2 or higher, a LightSpeed database, and a LightSpeed server with 1 available user license per LightSpeed Mobile client. For example: A 5-User LightSpeed Server can allow concurrent logins from up to 5 Mac or Mobile clients at one time. It is recommended that you upgrade your LightSpeed installation to accommodate any additional LightSpeed Mobile clients."
The bundle package listed is the recommended path for a user to upgrade that doesn't have extra user licenses. The support subscription is optional, but recommended so you can have the latest version of the software.
It's also important to point out that email support is free, even if you don't upgrade your support subscription, as well as the forums are available for community support, also free.
Yep, use it daily here, or try to anyways.. Not just a keyboard basher.. I put my Visa out there for it, and for their "annual service/support package" which I had to repeadatly ask for a refund on because they don't have the desire to support the software IMO. Eventually they gave me a 3 month extension on the lack of service package (an extension of support they can not really provide properly) - 3 months for 6 months of terrible support - you do the math. And given how niche this software is I would venture to say that most people commenting on it have experience using it. It's not like we are talking about Office or Firefox here.
Take a look through Xsilva's forum and you will see lots of feedback on the service and stability.
As for the licence fee's - Xsilva's site shows $1249 for a mobile kit - The retail of the Scanner/swiper is $499 - $750 for the seat/1 year service pack
No option to buy just the seat for the $550 you mention - so they should clarify that.
As I stated above - the service they sell is virtually useless. It's really a rip off.
I truly hope they get better at releasing software that works, support it. And I hope they come to their senses on the pricing of the mobile licences which have limited capabilities.
Are you on 3.2.2? Such an improvement and, as I mentioned earlier, just as stable as 2.9. Support has improved greatly in the last couple of months. As Leif mentioned, Xsilva has grown leaps and bounds and chosen not to outsource their support. I'm assuming that the next time you call support, you'll have a much better experience. I know I have.
September 28 2010 at 9:32 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI'd say as a whole Xsilva offers the best solution for the money. I've been using Lightspeed since 2006 after years of frustration with other commercially available and customized applications. It's been amazing to see a company grow so fast and still be heavily involved with their user base. As they've grown I have noticed some definite hiccups with support, but over time these issues have been ironed out. People underestimate the cost and human capital needed to run a good support team and I commend Xsilva for not outsourcing to foreign countries reading scripts like Intuit. I've also seen a lot of people running competitors software riddled with bugs and issues and they've just had to learn to move on and deal with it. Xsilva is consistently listening to their users to improve and fix their product. Tyler and Brad I worry that whoever is helping you with your Lightspeed system is very misguided and I'd love to try to help you out.

We've been using LS in our stores since 2006 as well, in fact we use it across three stores with over 30 daily users. There isn't an individual in our organization who could imagine maintaining our business without LS at the core of our workflow.
Nobody is going to buy LS licences based solely on LS mobile, it's an extension of your desktop client workflow. Going out into the field and visiting customers, maintaing a relationship and be able to invoice on the spot. Plus remember that the initial version of every piece of software always has limitations, that's what it is; an initial version, a starting point where you grow and expand from there.
Regarding LS as a whole, hiccups may occur but you're not purchasing a product with no backbone or support. Xsilva isn't the only support provider available to customers. The network of certified resellers is a tight knit bunch and should be your first point of contact with any issue.
Whoa! Just curious, those of you who are bashing.. do you actually use the software on a regular basis? Are you running a store? What were you running before you started using LightSpeed?
We've been running LightSpeed since 2006. Sure there have been bumps in the road, but.. last time I checked, I don't remember having any other perfect software. LightSpeed has saved us SO much time and money over the years compared to what we were using previously (customer built stuff).
Brad. You spent $30k on LS and you don't have it running after months? Sounds like you need to work with a reseller/installer that knows what they are doing.
Blake. A lot more than Square. Connecting directly to your live database has it's advantages. But if you just need to take a payment, then Square may be all you need.
I know of more people who are happy with LightSpeed than those who are not. Actually, any time I've heard of someone upset with LightSpeed, it usually comes down to them having not gotten connected with someone who can help them get set up or if they got bad advice about what LightSpeed can and can't do.
I'd be happy to share my experiences with anyone who wants to have a conversation and not just slop around in the mud. Leave that to the politicians!
I agree - LS is very poor at support, they are trying to get better - but the proof will be in the pudding as always. I wish they would get the speed better, the stability improved and the features that existed working 100%.
That said - I think the cost Xsilva has on this is too high. You have to buy a full seat licence for each handheld device you want to add - $749 each, same as a full access desktop licence. They you have to buy the app for $20.
I think a ~$199 limited access licence would be a lot more fair pricing wise. The mobile app does not do anywhere near what the desktop one does.
Buyer beware IMO. It may be the best app on Mac right now for most people, but that doesn't mean it may be the best solution overall.
Tony, the additional licenses are NOT $749 each. $749 gets you the first license. User licenses after that are $550, less after you get to 10 users.
September 28 2010 at 6:46 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyXsilva's support has drastically improved in the last month or so. A tier one agent answers and, if necessary, a tier two agent calls back within twenty minutes or so. This was my experience yesterday, at least. Xsilva was once known for their superior support and it's certainly coming back to that. They're certainly hiring constantly.
3.2.2 is just as stable as 2.9.1 in my experience... and a bit snappier. But that was certainly a rocky road getting there.
I downloaded LightSpeed Mobile last night and was quickly able to access my inventory and tested a few transactions. Very quick, very pleased. This will be huge.
As a Lightspeed user for the last 4 years, I will say the Lightspeed is the best POS software in it's price range that I have found. We have a 12 user license and the performance is quite acceptable, even on remote stations on slow connections. (we're talking AT&T EDGE network slow in some cases!!)
Xsilva recently completely re-wrote the database to a new engine which took quite a while to complete, longer than they expected. However, this new engine is what allows them to create these new features, such as an iOS app, which couldn't be done with the previous engine. During this period, their support still existed for customers, but they kept silent on progress of the update, which is pretty normal in the software business.
The 3.0 release was a bit buggy, to be sure. Those that upgraded right away had a rough ride. But now that they are on to 3.2, it's drastically improved. And now we're starting to see some of those cool features people wanted being added into the software.
Yes, there still are some basic features and workflow issues that need to be addressed in the system, but of all software companies I've worked with, Xsilva has been the one most likely to listen to their customers. Sometimes the changes don't happen as fast as you want them to, but they do listen.
Brad, if you need help going live with your LS install, hit me up. I might be able to help.
Brian - I would agree. I setup and installed Lightspeed 2.9 (have not upgraded to 3 yet) last year this time.
I work for a Toy Store that has well over 8,000 unique SKUs. The DB handles this data perfectly fine.
We recently had the Silly Bandz craze hit our store and I can safely say it handles high traffic use as we had lines of kids with no issues during checkout.
As far as support. I have never had to use it. Documentation is great and software is extremely easy to train and use.
Wow, those are absolutely the worst commercials I've seen in a long time, possibly my life.
