Apple TV deliveries begin -- we have unboxing photos and video

Several TUAW readers have let us know that their Apple TVs have arrived, and reader Clint even sent us a link to his MobileMe gallery of his official unboxing of the new device.

As you can see from the photos, the thing is tiny. The Apple TV comes packaged with a power cord, a remote, a small user manual, and of course, the ubiquitous Apple stickers. There's no HDMI cable included, so if you don't have one available, be sure to run to your nearest electronics store to pick one up so you can start playing with the Apple TV as soon as possible.

My personal Apple TV order was supposed to arrive tomorrow; it ended up getting delivered just after I finished writing the first draft of this post. By TUAW tradition, I am supposed to film and post an unboxing video immediately. You can view this instant classic on the next page -- just click the Read More link below.

Hmmm... I placed my order on Sep 17 but Apple says it will be shipped on Oct 18 and delivered on Oct 22. Why so late if other people are already receiving their units? Did they get so many pre-orders already???

Just saw that my Apple tv is on the truck for delivery. That's after a wide range of estimated arrivals ... originally yesterday, thenchanged to today, then moved to Oct. 5. Order still says Oct. 5 but tracking says it is out for delivery now. strange.

I'm very disappointed that this box will not play AVI or DivX files.

Steve Jobs would tell you that you need a new TV. Really though you can probably just get a competitor's box instead.

My question is... what happens if you plug a USB cable into the service port and connect it to a computer? What devices enumerate?

It will stream like the old one.

I spent hours working on ways to automate adding video files to iTunes that were AppleTV compatible. Recently I came across iFlicks (http://www.iflicksapp.com/).

Not only does it convert automatically via a watch folder, but it tags the metadata. It can also handle a dynamic queue without getting confused.

I'm not linked to the app other than being a customer and wanting it to be successful so it continues to be developed.

Just wanted to share.

Don't know if this has been addressed yet, but all I've seen in Apple's press is that you can stream stuff you bought/rented from iTunes store. What about stuff you've handbraked[sic] yourself? Will it let you stream that stuff too?

If you don't have HDMI cables, run to monoprice.
Not spam, just a fan.
