Apple TV jailbreak news: USB restore mode discovered
The Apple Press and Engadget bring us word that the Apple TV, when connected to iTunes via its mini USB port, pops up this "restore this device" dialog that will look very familiar to iPhone, iPod, and iPad users. This is another step forward for would-be Apple TV jailbreakers because it will give end users an easy way to inject custom firmwares onto their own devices without having to do any hardware modification.
So, to summarize: we know it has ample on-board storage for some apps, we know how to decrypt its firmware keys, we've seen the Lowtide interface loaded onto an iPod touch, and we could have a working jailbreak "within days." All this for a device that's been in people's hands for less than 24 hours. It now remains to be seen what a planet's worth of keen hackers and developers can put together for us to play with. Personally, I'm hoping for a port of Boxee and an iPlayer client. What would be your dream Apple TV app?

Speaking of jailbreak - http://www.wheresjobs.com/steve-reacts-to-tigers-assault/
haha I had to do it.
If the UK could stream LoveFilm rentals and BBC/ITV/Ch4 iplayers I would be all over the apple tv like a fat kid on cake.

Glad some progress is being made, ill definitely be eating my words about how similar the OSes are between AppleTV and iDevices. Dumping the headers out of the extracted binaries is a bit of a pickle so far, but bholland is on the case with a possible solution. porting software for it shouldn't be too bad once we have a good way to compile frappliances for ARM, and of course i don't imagine a jailbreak is too far away either.
Only thing I care about it having (beside it's iTunes streaming) is a Hulu player. Doesn't need to be through Boxee, just an app for Hulu. Not Hulu Plus, that'd be okay, but regular Hulu with a login feature.

September 30 2010 at 2:21 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyGot mine yesterday! Loving it so far, but really want to be able to playback/stream .Mov files that I have stored on my local and ext. drives... any ideas if this will be supported eventually by Apple or in the Jailbreak? Also, I would LOVE to see apps such as specific games come to the Apple TV! That would be awesome to be able to load a game and play the game using your iPhone as the controller or something like that. It would make it he ultimate Movie and gaming console in my opinion... ooohhh... I'm just dreaming of playing "Angry birds" on my big screen TV!!! ; )

For those wanting to plug in a DVD/BD/HD via USB -- unlike the previous Apple TV, this new one is a USB endpoint, not a USB host... it's not like Firewire; it doesn't go bidirectionally.
Just a thought...
iTunes will probably not allow the installation of any AppStore sourced iApps on the TV and the only way to install legit apps is if those apps are pirated.
Apps sourced from Cydia are the only ones that will run "legitimately".
