Rumor: Final Cut Studio update delayed until 2011

Those waiting on an update to Final Cut Studio may have to continue to do so, as a new rumor suggests it won't be released this year. Quoting a "source," Hardmac reports that the development of the next major update to Final Cut Studio has suffered "significant setbacks" and won't be available until 2011.

Hardmac notes that the scope of the project has been reduced as well, and the unified interface is a casualty of that reduction. The source says that differences between the team responsible for Shake and the team working on Motion are partly responsible, and representative of the overall difficulty in uniting all of the suite's applications.

Keep in mind that it's a rumor and not written in stone. If it turns out to be true, it's bad news for FCS users who are jonesing for something new.

I am a Premiere Pro CS5 user and frankly, it is awesome. The Mercury engine that Adobe delivered really works. It is blazingly fast for AVCHD work. The integration with After Effects and Photoshop is great. It does require 64-bit and a lot of RAM, but the performance is worth it.

"If it turns out to be true, it's bad news for FCS users who are jonesing for something new."

That'd be not only bad news for FCS users, but for all Mac users, since it shows that Apple has shifted their focus significantly on their fancy iDevices but is seriously neglecting the Mac business – not only, but especially in the "pro" segment.

And so far, I haven't seen any signs that this will be temporary shift. I honestly think that this does not bode well for the Mac.

Hardmac has zero credibility even without the whole 'there is no Shake team' stuff.

Also, consider a thought. Apple doesn't like to compound potential issues. So they might delay a major software update until after the early kinks in related products is worked out. Especially when the update is for a program being used for big expensive projects where time can be worth hundreds and thousands a minute.

Don't imagine that I will make any more money with the newer version than I am currently making with Studio now.
Frankly, I don't even know what version I am on now...
Oh yeah, I'm working on a two year old MBP too.
That said, I used to be on cutting edge (resting my feet on a boxed G5 with a ton o' RAM that's collecting dust), but I find that it really isn't necessary anymore for my work.
Sorry for those who are not satisfied. Maybe you should buy the $1000 version of Avid? {snicker}

Too soon anyway, imo. They just released the last suite about a year ago. I can't afford to keep up with an Adobe-like release pace.

I'd agree with you if FCP7 had been more of a substantial upgrade.

Over a year after Snow Leopard and it's 64 bit glory came to us, yet pretty much every app made by Apple aside from Aperture/Logic are still 32 bit. So glad I bought the new 12 core. Pretty awesome having 11 cores sitting on the sidelines when using Final Cut while Apple keeps engineers focused on blocking fart apps from giving us free tethering.

I read this on MacRumors this morning and for the first time in 10 years, clicked on Premiere in my applications folder. It was kind of amazing adding a huge gaussian blur to footage and just hitting play with no stuttering or anything like that. Amazing enough to switch? Not yet, but Premiere is on the radar now.

I really did use Premiere today, not for work work but to just poke around. I could probably pick it up it pretty quickly - especially because the effects controls are similar to After Effects. Some things seem a little weird, but that's every program. I think I have to stay with Final Cut for laying to tape, but rough cuts on Premiere with lots of After Effects integration could be very useful to me. I never got into motion - the interface was just too much for me to grasp - or maybe it was too little.

If you're a company like Apple, that money is in the pads, pods, and phones. Those devices need content though, and if Apple doesn't want to provide the tools for that then somebody else will. The sad thing is, Apple might not even give a crap if they lost tv people. We're probably the most vocal and annoying segment of their customer base - and bring in the least total profit. A short-sighted CFO might think we weren't much use to a 40 billion dollar company...

Apple's pro apps have been updated every two years for some time now. I'm not sure why anyone expected a significant new version of Final Cut before 2011.

Also, "the team responsible for Shake" no longer exists - Apple stopped maintaining Shake years ago, and stopped selling the product entirely in 2009.

...so hoping for a release soon so that Adobe can be crushed!
