TUAW's Daily App: Weather HD for iPhone

You may already know all about Weather HD -- the app made a nice splash when it was released early in the iPad's life. But Vimov has just released it for the iPhone, and even on the smaller screen, it leaves quite an impression. The idea is that instead of a tiny little icon or a big number telling you the weather, you get a full, bright screen of whatever the weather's like near you (or what it's going to be like in an hourly or daily forecast).

The app is super simple on purpose, so if you're looking for full maps, video, or more detailed information, you'll have to go elsewhere (I usually use the free Weather Channel app for more in-depth weather updates). Still, for just 99 cents, Weather HD is worth having around if all you need to check every once in a while is the temperature and forecast.

And heck, if you already bought it for the iPad, the new version is universal, so you've got iPhone and iPod touch support anyway.

Eh... World Weather offers close to the same functionality and clocks in at 3 MB. Plus, their info is presently in a much cleaner fashion.

Weather HD is cool on iPads when they're docked. But they stretched and missed with the iPhone version.

This weather app uses way too much of the screen for a picture of limited value. For quick weather updates, the iPhone's built-in weather app works for me. I like Wunderground's weather app for in-depth weather info.

My-cast is the best app I've tried -- so chock full of information.

Just some days ago I stumbled a weather app on macupdate.com that has a comic style graphic but also gives you a full screen weather impression and includes some kind of tamagotchi. Theres a flower you can take care of while checking the forecast and if you water it it grows.
It's called "Floret" and I actually have the Mac version but there's a iPod/iPhone version, too.

I bought this for my iPad when the big craze hit and popped it onto my phone for a few minutes when this update came out just to see what it looked like. Ultimately, nearly 200 MB worth of space taken up for a feature poor weather app just wasn't worth it on either platform. The video doesn't even look that good on the Retina display either.

And yet another item from the jailbreak community makes its way to mainstream iPhone users.

It's a weather app. You're giving the jailbreak community way too much credit.

@ Mark: Outside of having this info on a lock screen - what are you talking about? This app was never available in the JB community as a standalone. You could only get similar functionality theming up Winterboard.

I love jailbreaking as much as the next iPhone user but this just ain't true.
