Left 4 Dead 2 coming to the Mac this Tuesday
This is it -- the rumors were true! The last non-Mac holdout of Valve's Source titles is Left 4 Dead, the zombie-killing shooter featuring four survivors and a whole lot of undead, but that's about to change. The official site for the newest Left 4 Dead 2 downloadable content, "The Sacrifice," confirms that the game's sequel is coming to the Mac this very Tuesday, October 5th. Left 4 Dead 2 will be released, as have all of the Source games, under the Steam Play banner. That means if you own it on the PC, you also own it on the Mac, so all you'll have to do is download and start shooting zombies.Anyone who buys the game on Steam will get all of the DLC for free, which makes for the original five campaigns plus the three DLC levels to play through. That's an excellent deal for sure.
Unfortunately, the first game is not yet ready for the Mac; apparently, it's taking Valve a little longer than expected to get it OS X-compatible. But Valve promises that when it is released, Steam owners will get the same deal -- all the DLC with the game itself. That's good stuff. Of course, with Left 4 Dead finally coming to our platform, which game will we be stuck waiting for next? Civ V, where you at?
Thanks, Ben H!

Good on Valve for supporting the Mac community. It is probably a lot more difficult than most of us realize since Mac only has about 3.6% market share, making it unlikely that an older game like Left for Dead 1 or 2 will be profitable. Just goes to show how stand up Valve is that they are essentially giving it away in a time when every other company wants you to pay to play old games (that you already may own) on different or newer systems.

Jon -thanks buddy, the time in Denmark is 18.41 now, and unfortunately still no sign of L4D2 :(
Does anybody know if steam releases ganes 00.01 or is it just a random time, IF they do release it in a certain time, does anybody then know what timezone they are going by?

Often new weekly sales go up at 1PM EST 10AM PST. So, personally I"m betting on no sooner than 1PM EST. Games have released at 2-5PM EST as well.

October 04 2010 at 4:21 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI imagine a lot of the delays are due to the sorry state of mac graphics cards available. It must be tough trying to re-engineer these graphically heavy games so that there isn't mass OSX user disappointment and complaints.
L4D2 will NOT play well on most of the default mac graphics cards, and I imagine Civ V won't either - it chunks up even with a 1GB Radeon 4870 which is better than anything Apple is currently offering.
Game devs aren't going to put a lot of effort into the OSX platform until Apple takes gamers more seriously and offers up some decent cards.
This is great! One less reason to boot into Windows 7.

October 04 2010 at 5:02 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt would be nice if some Mac blogs would start taking some developers to task about why they are not bringing native Mac builds of their titles in light of record quarter after quarter Mac sales and Valve's Mac Steam as well as giving away their graphics code for ports. Bethesda, 2K, Epic, EA, Ubisoft, Bioware all have games coming to market for the Christmas season with no native Mac announcements.
