Rumor: iLife '11 to be 64-bit, iOS compatible

iLife, the software suite that is included on every Mac and is made up of iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, iWeb, and iDVD, hasn't been updated to a new version since January, 2009. That, of course, is making many of us in the Apple world curious about when the next version of the suite will appear on the market. Many Mac pundits believe the next edition will be iLife '11, and we've already seen several of the rumored release dates fly past without sign of the new iLife.

Now some sharp-eyed Apple fans have noticed that there's a book listed on the German Amazon site with the title "iLife '11: Digital pictures, movies, music and more" and a release date of December, 2010.

The translated description notes that the suite is entirely 64-bit, and that iPhoto will receive integration with social networking. iWeb has been "rewritten" from the ground up, and iDVD is no longer included with the suite. There's mention of a "new application," but no word on what the function or name of the new member of the suite will be.

The red banner on the cover mockup at left reads "iPhoto, iMovie and more, with Apps for Mac, iPhone 4, iPod and iPad," which implies that iOS versions of the applications will be available as well. At this time, of course, iMovie is available for iOS, and it would not be much of a stretch to assume that iOS-compatible versions of the other applications could be developed. After all, Apple made an iPad version of iWork available on day one.

The book is written by Uwe Nerger, who has no other published titles to his name. That brings up the question how an unpublished author has been given access to a suite of applications that many published authors of Apple tomes have not seen. Take this rumor with a fist-sized grain of salt.

I wish they'd update iDVD. It's in great need of an update and is quite buggy in it's current state. I hope it's rolled into iMovie and given a make over. I use it frequently in converting my VHS home videos to DVD, I'd hate to be stuck with the current version.

"Uwe Nerger" is an anagram for "newer urge".

Oh, one more point debasing the credibility of this Amazon listing: the marketing blurb is extremely badly written and full of grammatical errors. I guess that doesn't stand out as much in the Google translation.

Who says the established authors haven't seen iLife 11? Just because this is the first book Amazon lists, it doesn't mean this is the first book about iLife 11 actually written and just waiting in some drawer to be released.

However, I agree with the general notion that this announcement is pretty much based on speculation – which is funny for being self-referential: speculation caused a cautionary announcement with in turn caused more speculation.

Hahaha, and iWork '10 is going to be released Feb 24, 2011. Someone's having a prank party at Amazon...

Think this is probably fake. However, I agree with JoeAD that the rumored new app will likely be iBooks for Mac.

Why would they completely remove iDVD? Can you still keep your old version?

I know "physical media is dead" but not everyone wants to upload everything to YouTube.

Plus DVD menus are great for finding stuff in longer content, and it's easy to play stuff for an entire room full of people on a TV with DVDs.

iDVD already was something like the unloved foster child in the last couple of versions of iLife and didn't get a lot of attention – close to none at all. So it's just logical that there probably won't be another version.

>Can you still keep your old version?

Why shouldn't you? It's not as if the iLife installer rips every other app from your hard disc. What could happen though, is that the old iDVD doesn't work that well together with its (potential) newer brethren.

You can list anything on Amazon as long as there is an ISBN number for it. Publishers often add titles to the Amazon database based on speculation. This has happened with several Apple titles (including Aperture).

I was listed as having an Aperture 3 book that I hadn't written, which was scheduled in Amazon to release a year before the title shipped.

Doesn't mean there's no iLife 11 coming, it just means that an appearance on Amazon doesn't mean a thing.

Completely agree. These stories keep cropping up, and I just can't see the logic in the idea that Apple would let a German book publisher in on details of an upcoming project. This won't be how the juicy stuff leaks.

Personally, I think iWeb on iPad would be fantastic.

Agreed. I can imagine them trying to make creating websites almost as easy as reading them, which is something the iPad is pretty good at.
