TUAW video review of the new Apple TV

Yesterday afternoon on TUAW TV Live, I ran a 21-minute video that I put together that shows the features of the new Apple TV as well as the Apple Remote app for iPad. This was part of a special TUAW TV Live episode (which can be viewed in its entirety here) focusing on the Apple TV.

Since many readers might want to see how the Apple TV works without watching the whole hour-long TUAW TV Live episode, I've taken the liberty of posting two YouTube videos that show how the device works. I also have some opinions on the device, which I'm glad to share -- I think version 2.0 of the Apple TV is a huge improvement over the first device in size, power efficiency, speed, price, and clarity. Apple still needs to increase the number of video sources (networks in particular) that can be streamed from the device, and AirPlay won't go live for another month or so, but I already consider device the best $99 I've spent on tech equipment in 2010.

Check out the video (split into two pieces to fit onto YouTube) on the next page.

Having watched your very informative video I have placed an order for a new Apple TV. Your video is so much better than Steve Jobs official version. you give the viewer exactly what they want to know. That is " How will this this perform in my home setup".

Many thanks!

You said that Airplay doesn't work yet?

Maybe your referring to the features in the forthcoming iPad iOS update (works beautifully for beta testers).

But you can still use Airplay by enabling your home sharing on the ATV and computer - then playing music from your computer. This is just like you have always been able to do with Airport Express stations.

Yeah he's talking about the iPhone/iPad features due out in November that allow you to begin playing something on your mobile device, then click the Airplay icon and send it instantly to your AppleTV to watch on the "big screen". :)

Looking forward to that!!! :) Maybe I'll finally get an iPad.

Hate the puny remote LOVE the Apple Remote App for the ipad. This is the BEST WAY t o set up Apple TV since you get to type all your passwords in a more keyboard like way.

I have one burning question... when you search local computers for media, what fields are included in the search?

I've got hundreds of movies on my home server, all well organized with tags added to the 'Comments' field for each movie. It includes 'Action', 'Adventure', 'Treasure Hunting', etc. all different key words that identify a type of movie we might be in the mood for. Will the AppleTV search function find these comments?

I did a search of my library within the Remote app and the search appeared to only apply to the file's name itself. If this is consistent with the Apple TV then this is useless to me.

Thanks to anyone that can provide a solid answer.

Pretty sure search only applies to titles, unfortunately. If I were you, I'd set up a bunch of smart playlists based on whatever criteria you think's important (comments, genre etc.) and turn to those for browsing your movies.

It would be even better if the remote on the iPad would have a full interface, not being just a remote trackpad. In that case internet radio and iTunes could be used without turning on the tv.

Um... the remote app DOES have a very full interface, it's pretty much identical to the iPod app and the Video app. The trackpad-style controls are just an option. Check out the iPad screenshots for the app, you can find any local content you want.

(Can't access internet radio though, you're right about that...)

Love the ability to stream my edited home movies in HD. I've had the Canon HF100 for over two years. I've edited, etc. and then synced to my iOS devices and to MobileMe. Now I can stream an HD version via the AppleTV.

That was worth the price, period.

So you believe that the protection on the HDMI output is Apple's fault? Uhh, don't blame the hardware, blame Hollywood for HDCP.

How does all of this work with a multiple Mac/iOS device household?

For instance, my wife and I both have media on our Macs, some from the iTunes store, most ripped from CDs/DVDs/Blu-Rays. Once we connect from the Apple TV, will there be two computers listed and we pick which to look through? Is this a quick switch? Also, we both have iPhone 4s, will we be able to control the unit, or do we have to go and pick an iOS device to control.

Your two computers will be listed separately under the "Computers" section of the main menu, and each computer will have its own music/movies/TV shows sections. It's a pretty quick switch, but it would be nice if it could give you a "combined view". Oh well.

And the KEY is setting up all your iTunes accounts (yours, spouse, kids, etc.) to use the SAME Homeshare username & password.

It doesn't mean they'll purchase things from your account, but that's the only way to see them at the same time (without having to turn off sharing, then turn it on again using a different Homeshare username & password every time you want to change libraries).

And when I want to connect one of my two DVI only Plasma monitors? It won't work because of the sodding protection on the HDMI output. I am a big apple fan but this is lame beyond belief!

My questions, since I have a daily 525MB Fair Access Policy cap from my ISP are movies likely to exceed that cap? And how does this play with Satellite Internet?
