Updated Skype for Mac "coming soon"

On Thursday, Skype unveiled Skype 5.0 for Windows. Among some pretty cool new features are group video calling and Facebook integration. The Facebook integration lets you view your Facebook news feed, sync your Skype mood messages and Facebook status, and call friends from your Facebook phone book. They're all cool features, and they're all for Windows, ... but not for long.

The official Skype for Mac blog says that the next version of Skype for Mac is "coming soon" and will deliver group video calling to the Mac. While they don't specifically mention Facebook integration, the Skype blog does note that the next iteration of Skype for Mac will be a "complete overhaul, both in terms of the way it looks, and in terms of functionality." That sounds pretty cool -- now, how about a Skype iPad app?

I classify myself as a rabid Skype fan but I'm slowly loosing faith with their Mac intentions. Skype is a cornerstone of one of my businesses that places short interviews with shakers and movers in the employment space online. So far we have over 300 videos in place on our web sites, Vimeo, Blip, YouTube, etc.

Where is the HD video? The multi video chat? The Facebook integration? It seems that the developers in Belgium are unfamiliar with the dynamics of who is actually 'using' Skype vs those who have downloaded it and tried it once or twice. Many of my Mac friends are using Skype in lieu of their landline phones, etc.

I wish I knew what buttons to press to make the Skype Gods look seriously at the #1 PC company (including iPad as PC's) and start moving things along.

Hey Skype;

Get off your arse and integrate video calling NOW. It can't be that difficult. You'll instantly dominate the iPhone4 crowd and get an early lock on the market.

Why you can't seem to understand this and continue to drag your feet is beyond me....although, based on your past performances, unsurprising.

They need to fix the bug where Skype triggers the nVidia card on the 2010 MBPs at ALL TIMES unless video is EXPLICITLY DISABLED.

Please let it come to pass that there’s finally a way to turn off the dock icon, e.g. to have Skype run akin to an omnipresent service rather than an regular application. I never keep Skype open on my Mac for this reason.

Ditto for making the menu bar icon look monochromatically native, rather than green. There’s a big GetSatisfaction thread about both of these things.

Not much to worry about here, at least for the time being. "Coming Soon" in "Skype for Mac" world has typically meant, "Coming....... eventually." We saw it with the iPhone upgrades too. But I'm with you, the interface on Skype for Mac is one of the greatest things about it!

I'm not holding my breath.

What they need to add is multiple language fields along with fluency level for each one since this is an international app. Numerous times I've gotten people wanting to speak to me either in my native language and their ability was way to low for me to speak to them, or just the opposite in the language I'm learning.

Also being able to search on fluency level would be a good addition too.

I hope they don't make the mac interface bloated like skype for windows is. Group video chat is nice, but I'm really not looking for facebook integration. Hopefully they can make it some sort of optional plug-in.

Noooo

the best part of the skype on the mac is that it is like it is, and nothing like the horrid windows interface!!!

Please keep it like that - don't waste your time changing what is working and it is good! Make video calls work on the iphone, THAT would be a nice thing to spend developer time.

Agreed. I can't recall how many times I've had to help a relative using Skype on Windows and it goes like this:

I just sent you the link in chat. No, wait. Open up the main Skype window. Look around where the video is for me. Oh? First click back on my name in the list on the left. Can you see the video of me? Ok, great. Now, look around for a button at the bottom of the video that will make no sense to you and perfect sense to programmers. The button un-hides the chat area. Ok, great, you got it. now scroll up/down in it because it's only 4 lines tall. ... and on and on ... now, click Accept.
