New Kindle app for Macs adds many desired features

I do most of my reading of books purchased from Amazon on my iPad, but there are times where my laptop and desktop Mac would be just dandy for catching up on my non dead-tree efforts.

Amazon has released a new version of Kindle for Mac, and it brings the Mac version up to feature parity with the iOS versions. The new version includes these capabilities:

  • Add, edit or delete notes and highlights
  • Search for words or phrases in a book
  • Multi-column text is now supported
  • The overall look and feel are improved and a bit more contemporary

The update is free of course, and a quick download. I'd like to use the Apple iBookstore more often, but the selection of books just isn't there. Also, Apple doesn't even have an app that will let you access your iBooks on Mac desktops or laptops, which is a pretty big omission in my view.

Really disappointing... does not work on 10.5.8 on my PowerBookG4 --- It's only a g##d### book reader for ##### sake! Nothing overly system taxing!

"You can't open the Application "Kindle" because it's not supported on this architecture"

Way to go Amazon.

You would think that with a name like that they would at least try to be green by not obsoleting perfectly usable hardware.

Are each of the reader (iBooks, Kindle, Nook) completely proprietary (read: DRM) as to viewing purchased ebooks? I know that the open epub files can be read by any of these apps, but for example can I read an ebook I purchase from Amazon in iBooks - or vice versa?

Still not possible to copy and paste text. Useless without this feature. Need to be able to work with excerpts

Haven't had a chance to try the Mac client yet, but on Windows you can get copy paste by the following:
Highlight text
Select Search from the pop up menu
then go to the search box (which has been populated with the text you highlighted), select all, and copy.

Thanks TetonSig! I tested it and it didn't work via select all and copy, but via select all and the services menue (send text to another application). A good workaround!

Did they pull it? I try downloading, but keep getting the 9.9MB beta version from last March.

I just downloaded it & it crashed twice in less that two minutes. Hmm...

Strangely, it displays only a fairly narrow strip of text on my screen. It looks like a bug, maybe due to my dual-screen setup...

Is it just me or would i be cool if you could manage your other devices. Say, send this archived book to my Ipad.
