If you don't have Snow Leopard, iLife '11 is a no-no
iLife '09 was certainly moving toward an Intel processor requirement, but iLife '11 has made the transition complete with even tighter requirements. You have to have an Intel-based Mac, of course, and that Mac has to be running Snow Leopard.
It's not a giant surprise; things have been slowly rolling that way, both from Apple and other Mac software developers. If you are still running that big Mac G5 desktop or one of the older non-Intel laptops the walls are slowly closing in on you.
Also note that iLife '11 really wants you to have only the latest version of the software suite. An install will upgrade (replace) iLife '09, so once you pull the trigger there is no going back. Consider yourself informed, and warned. Do you feel it is a mistake for Apple to leave so many customers behind, or are you OK with the new requirements?

I have over $3500 invested in my Powerbook G4, and the outdated airport base stations and software. I already had to get a new airport Express. Bought it in 2005.
Then, Jobs decides he wants to go with intel chips.
I love my Powerbook. It runs great.
The are putting out too many new operating systems and some people are going to be forced to back to PCs...we all don't have Job's kind of money.
I am furious that the money invested in my beloved Powerbook is now so outdated.
I don't know who Job's target market is, but they must be in the top 1% of the population who have lots of bucks to spend on gadgets.
Some people just want a good computer that will last till the replacement parts are no longer available.
And many people don't use their computers to make movies and do all the innovative things that the newer operating systems will do much easier.
And that includes me.
I love Macs....but Job's is going to price me out of the computers I love best.
Who is his target market anyway????
Hate me, disagree with me or vilify me, but this just plain sucks!
I read a "Mac rumor" the other day that told about Apple exploring the use of nitride coatings to make their products more scratch-proof and durable. Well halle-freakin-lujah! A company who actually desires to improve upon the LONGEVITY of their products for their customers. I think moves like that will go a long way. This line of thinking MUST be applied to their software as well! Updates and new features are great, but at the expense of eliminating your less-than-wealthy customers? I LOVE watching the Apple special events. I'm always on the edge of my seat with these iLife updates. But should I have to upgrade my entire OS to be able to run the latest software?
When it comes to Apple's software and hardware updates, the word "frequently" is an understatement. They are on top of their game. No argument there. But make software that is as backwards compatible as possible! Having an OS that refuses to adapt, or an iLife package that refuses to play nicely with even the second-to-last OS is a step in the WRONG direction.
My iLife just got iRate. I was so pumped up with the demonstrations and was excited to use iMovie for my projects. Then, BOOM!, it's only for those using Snow Leopard. That leaves most of the Mac users punching the wall and shouting "Why? Why?'. That includes me.
At this rate, I will need to upgrade to Snow Leopard and to iLife 11. Don't they have like a back-to-back package like before?
Talk about wetting your appetite with a stake only to be tossed to the dogs because you didn't have Snow Leopard. iLife 11 would have to wait for now.
If you want to create and print a calendar with iPhoto, don't upgrade to iPhoto 11 yet, it's not there, they're working on adding it later.

The concept of paying over $1,000 for a consumer machine in 2011 is so ridiculous I can't comprehend it.
Thanks to Craig's List, in another couple years, the Core Duo 2 iMacs will be available for $350 and I'll swoop down and upgrade then.
@wonderboy
I had that coming ;-)
think most of u are missing something here: Lion is due out (yes, this could change) in Summer '11. this would make 10.6 the old OS & 10.5 two versions back. with that happening, support is going to slack off or cease by the end of 2011... so this is why iLife '11 is only being sold for 10.6 as 10.5 is going to fall out of support by this time next year.
support for 10.5 has already wound down imo. besides security updates & final java update now, there hasn't been any thing else.
I recently upgraded my PPC G5 dual core (which was playing up a bit hardware-wise) for a PPC G5 quad core with 8GB of ram. Why? Cos it cost me $350. That's probably 10% of what the equivalent intel model would cost.
Do I care if i can't install iLife or iWork 11 or CS5? Nope. This is far and away the fastest most stable computer I have owned. It runs leopard which is a pretty decent OS and all that cutting edge software from the recent past. In real terms, unless software forces me to, I will have no reason to upgrade for another 5 years.
It is pretty annoying when one can't use or play something because the hardware is no longer supported; but these big silver boxes make decent home servers or in target mode very large HD caddies ;-)
I'm no DINK and the idea of forking out bundles of smuttly every 4 years for a computer when my fridge, freezer, dishwasher and microwave all work after 20 years; just seems daft. What's the expression, "Cut your cloth according to your wallet"?
'Enjoy what you got and save up' is my motto.
I applaud your attitude, true frugality is like a unicorn... rarely seen, nearly impossible to get your hands on.
On the other hand, I have to disagree with the comparison to home appliances. A fridge keeps your food cold, and cold is cold. Upgrades can be more efficient, but there's a fairly easy calculation to determine when that efficiency, combined with the purchase price of a new unit, is actually more cost effective. On the other hand, computers do so much more and the capabilities is changing constantly. Computers are such an integral part of our lives, it's easy to see why people "need" to upgrade every few years. To me, a comparison of the two is irrelevant.
Of course, to each his own... if you are satisfied with what you've got, great for you. Your bank account will thank you.
All I know is that you really should be running SL now because if you are on intel then there is no excuse and its so cheap to buy!!! quite the complaining the future is forward not backwards!!
October 22 2010 at 6:48 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIt's kind of unfair to say once you upgrade to iLife 11 there's no going back. You can always pop in your system discs and reinstall iLife 09.
One another note, it's always funny to me that people get on Apple's back about not updating software fast enough. But when they do push out a new version they complain that it's not able to run on 5 year old Macs.
Hello! This is Apple. They do not believe that backwards compatibility should stunt a technologies growth.
If you have an old PowerMac G5 then more than likely you are using it in some professional manner. And it probably still is great at completing the task at hand. And if you are doing your task well and getting paid for it then you need to budget in a new Mac every 3 - 5 years. Apple computer have the best resale value. Sell your aging gear and new stuff and stop complaining.
