Timeline tweak returns iMovie '11 to old school

iMovie '11 makes it easy to regain the traditional horizontal timeline that was lost with iMovie '06, to the delight of many.

When Apple released iMovie '08 in August of 2007, many users were upset by the decision to move the timeline from the bottom of the app's window to the upper left-hand corner. The outcry was so loud that Apple made iMovie '06 available for download.

Now, version '11 lets you put a vertical timeline back in place. As TidBITS explains, it's a simple as swapping the Events and Projects browsers. Yes, you can make that swap in iMovie '08 and '09, but this is the first time it will result in a horizontal timeline.

I am happy that Apple upgraded the iMovie and made it even cooler. However, I just found out that the new iLife 11 will not run if you don't have Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Just my luck. I'm not running Snow Leopard yet. And, with the soon-to-be released Lion version, I'm not so sure if I'll be upgrading at all to Snow Leopard. Sad.

It's not soon-to-be-released, Jobs said next summer.

I've only ever dabbled with iMovie but I did used to plug in my old MiniDV camcorder over FireWire and import the footage to iMovie. Is this still possible in the new one (yes I have a MacBook pro with FireWire)?

This may be a little off topic but what is a good movie editor for the iPhone (actually iPod Touch 4g) I know iMovie has an app but I'm assuming it won't be 'upgraded' yearly right?

Before iMovie for iPhone, there was Reel Director. It still beats iMove for iPhone in customization choices, so I use both.

There is NO NEED to swap the two thingies. There's a button on the top right hand corner of the timeline that lets you switch between the two modes. Can't believe nobody saw it.

Isn't it a little more traditional to have the timeline at the bottom, though?

When I watched to demo, I thought, this is exactly like iMovie HD - so basically this completes the migration of all features from iMovied HD into the new iMovie.

Can anyone comment on whether or not the new version allows for editing all of the various video types that '06 could handle? My biggest struggle with '09 has been trying to figure out which video types will work with it and why the movie I'm trying to edit won't work when others of the same type will.

It's just as incompatible as it used to be. Shouldn't this be using the QuickTime APIs too? Madness.

I haven't made anything with iMovie since '06, this is the first time I've been excited about the software since then.

I was really pissed when Apple ruined iMovie — but in the end, I have to thank them. It forced me to learn Adobe Premiere Pro (Wasn't gonna go to FCP -- told you I was pissed off right?) and now, as my taxes will attest, last year over 70% of my income came from video projects.

Thank you Apple!

(Whenever Mr. Jobs trots out the lead dev at the Apple events I think to myself, "So, this is the guy who ruined iMovie hmmm ...)

Why resist the hop to Final Cut Pro, anyway? Pissed at Apple's consumer software team, yes, but pissed at Apple's professional software team, too?

I admit, I was peeved too, but iMovie '11 has made me a full-time convert.
