Jobs says iTunes extras are "coming" to Apple TV

Steve Jobs emails tend to lie along a spectrum: at one end, they're pretty much useless (and probably often fake), and at the other end, they're interesting little glances at features we might get in the future. I'm putting this one in the second category, but of course, as usual, it's up to you what you think of it. Jobs allegedly replied to a question about iTunes LPs and iTunes Extras arriving on the new Apple TV software anytime soon, and his one word reply, sent directly from his iPhone, is supposed to be: "Coming."

So presumably we'll see those features added back in soon. We already know there's a firmware update coming for AirPlay functionality, and that one's due out as soon as next week, so we can hope that iTunes Extras and LP support will be included in there. Steve's not known for being too garrulous in these emails, and in this one, he didn't have to be. If you buy that it's a real email from Jobs, those extra features are "coming" to the Apple TV soon.

I have a difficult time believing this, since the Apple TV is all about streaming and renting. And even of this would apply to Extras content in your iTunes library in your computer, I'm not sure that it would stream well.

I have to disagree, as the iTunes LP content is essentially just an HTML5 website. This could easily be hosted by Apple's new datacenter in NC (Once it goes live.)

Even still if it could just content purchased on your mac, the mac could act as a simple web server and show the page on Apple TV.

And since the new AppleTV is essentially an iPad in a box it is more than capable of displaying a web page.

why not? ATV already supports pictures, and video.. they're not using brand new exclusive image or video technology/codecs for LP content. standards based (HTML5, and CSS)

itunes is not much more than a highly specialized browser.. if itunes can play it, ATV can too.

streaming from "the cloud" or your local machine is irrelevant. why would you use your bradband connection to stream stuff you BOUGHT (music)... there's no rental model for music is there?

That would be nice, but what about for the iPad? I would love to have iTunes LP content on iPad.

The first gen Apple TV does indeed let you sync iTunes LP's and extras.

...Never tried playing one though, because they are mostly useless.

Is it possible that's because Apple TV Gen 1 supported iTunes LPs? I seem to remember they did.. maybe a false memory.

Well, if you take a look at http://www.apple.com/itunes/lp-and-extras/, you'll notice several references to the Apple TV, along with some careless mistakes regarding the spelling (initial capital letters).
