Thieves drive truck through Apple retailer's wall

We've heard of quite a few robberies at Apple Stores (and in its own twisted way, the idea makes sense -- despite the adage that 'crime doesn't pay,' laptops and iPhones are certainly easy to carry and very resellable), but this is probably the most brute force way we've seen it done. A set of thieves in Portland, Oregon just plain crashed a truck through the front window of the MacPac reseller there, and ripped off some iPads, MacBooks, and a few more devices from the store a few weeks ago.

Fortunately, it sounds like things are as under control as they can be -- not only did the store's cameras capture the suspects on tape, but the police showed up within minutes, and the store's owner says that even though this has happened before, "the last person who did this we put away." So it sounds like justice will be served up, Apple retailer style, soon enough.

Thanks, Patrick!

I was thinking a much more dramatic, breaking glass on Fifth Avenue Store and realize they are in a basement situation.

I'd like to see someone try this at the new Shanghai store.

In my city (in the UK) a lot of shops have installed solid steel bollards in front of their stores -- we've even had whole ATMs being stolen in this fashion.

Any one fancying driving through the walls despite the bollards get quite a jarring -- unfortunately, they use stolen vehicles so they're not bothered if it gets badly damaged.

I guess if you're determined enough, nothing will stop you. Glad nobody has been hurt though. A few years ago I worked at one of the PC world stores in the UK. Our store was targeted a few times, once a small child climbed through an air vent and passed laptops out, another time the side of the building was broken through with a mini JCB digger and laptops taken. Finally, a gang armed with mashetes stormed the front doors at closing time. I left shortly after that for a safer life in the country.

Call Michael Bay, I sense a blockbuster if you market the story rights correctly...

This happened what... several weeks ago? Staying slightly more current (or at least saying that it happened a while ago) would be a good idea, although writing the article at the time of the incident would be the best course of action.

Too bad, despite the fact that "the heist was all caught on tape, and cameras got a clear look at the suspects" there is no video to be found online.
