Grand Theft Auto trilogy finally coming to the Mac

Man, it's about $*#(ing time. The storied (and dare I say classic?) Grand Theft Auto trilogy, featuring GTA 3, GTA Vice City, and GTA San Andreas, is finally coming to the Mac thanks to Transgaming. Of course, it's about ten years late -- the first game in the grouping came out in 2001 on the PS2. On current-gen gaming consoles, gamers have enjoyed Grand Theft Auto IV for a few years, and Rockstar released Red Dead Redemption earlier this year and is priming for a game called L.A. Noire. I'm surprised these haven't been released on the Mac yet; especially with Steam on the platform, you'd think there would have been a port at some point.

You can order the Mac versions of the Grand Theft Auto trilogy right now for $15 each online, and in about a month they'll be showing up in various retail stores. If you somehow missed these the first time around, or if you just want a few terrific older games to play on your Mac, you can pick and play these. Just keep them away from the kids -- they're all very mature games.

It's not only funny that there are people who buy macs, but then they wait and wait for games they love to be released on them. The problem is that even though mac lovers are lied to over and over and told their macs are faster, they aren't. .. Well, unless you compare to lower end PC's, then ok. But I had to spend a bit to get a nice PC with good graphics card that gives a great, yes great, GTA 4 experience. i7 processor with good nvidia. I didn't need to, but I over clocked to 4ghz. It cost me about $730. But try that on a mac and it won't happen unless you spend oodles. And then the hardware still isn't really as good of a setup as a high end PC. Even if you spend more than double the cash, $1600!, you end up with a lousy core2duo cpu from apple.

And Yes, the cpu, if weak enough results in slower game play. You get a pretty, white, thinner mac case. But that doesn't really allow for putting in bigger hardware from nvida, or even a heat sink etc.. So in the end most mac users just end up with sub par performance. To even get into the i7 realm, you'd have to spend $2000. And you guessed it, my computer is still quit a bit faster than the $2000 imac in games, and also in rendering video. It's actually faster than a $2500 mac pro. (a clown will show up and say it's not true, but I tested all of this). And I already showed a friend of mine a hackintoshed osx running that beat his imac pretty badly. He was sick, but laughed because it was funny and thought it was cool. That said, I prefer windows 7... But seriously, all this time and money spent to get a mac because it's supposed to be that superior, yet it really isn't. And I've had no problems with anything in windows 7. I mean, I could see it if I were having these terrible problems. Problems so bad, I'd have to go blow 2 grand. But I'm not. I can load in adobe and vegas etc and finish video projects quicker than my friend as well. Time to wake up??

I forgot to say. I eventually got rid of my older nvidia card and bought an nvidia GTX 470 which is nearly 90% the speed of the 480. Just pulled one out and put in the other. That upped my pc's price a bit. Initially $390 for the card, but then it went on sale for $275. Now the gfx ability is about double my old card. I can also SLI them if I want to buy another card, but it's not needed. The total price of my computer would still be right around, or slightly under $1000. And there would be no room in most macs to do what I'm doing. Nor would they fit etc. . I want speed, power and good price. And contrary to what mac users think, you can get a very high quality, high end PC that is trouble free if you shop around a bit. Especially under windows 7. And from what I hear this port isn't so hot anyway. Ports usually aren't. You can turn down detail and run it, but you'll never see the finest details at a high frame rate. I'm looking forward to GTA 5 and think I'll be able to run it.... hopefully.

I was playing the cider port (i own the original) of san andreas on my mbp this very evening. how weird to see this after that. I can't believe it's taken so long for this to come out officially. Bittorrent folks... ;-)

Still trying to figure out how to use my xbox controller for it though..

From the article:

"You can order the Mac versions of the Grand Theft Auto trilogy right now for $15 each online" -- there's even a link.

I've had nothing but problems with Transgaming's port of Dragon Age for the Mac. The game has inconsistent graphic performance; requires a reinstall (!!) after every OS update; crashes randomly; has too many sound dropouts. I will never buy another Transgaming port. (Thank goodness I bought DA when it was on sale.)

Could somebody tell if a late 2008 Mac Mini (GPU: Intel GMA950) is able to run GTA SA properly (or even GTA 3)? I also own an early 2009 MBP which is more powerful but gaming is much better at a desktop computer...

None of the GTA games will run on a GMA 950. The required minimum spec for playing GTA with an integrated graphics card is a GMA X3100.

I'll buy it. All of them. I already have GTA3 on PS2, PC, Xbox and soon Mac. Just a classic game, so is Vice City. San Andreas not so much, but it's still great. Haven't bought any games (or for that matter, played any games) for my Mac yet, and I made the switch 4 years ago.

I think "mature" isn't quite the word to describe these games. :P

Sadly, it seems owning the Windows version doesn't net you the Mac version. And I'm not really keen on buying San Andreas for the 4th time. (PS2 when it came out, Windows as I had a PC at the time and PC GTA > PS2 GTA, then Xbox version after I got a Mac and no longer had a PS2).

What makes you think that the Mac version won't be available to owners of the Windows versions?

I bought the £5 GTA bundle specifically so that when it migrates to Mac I can play it. Every other game i own on Steam is playable cross platform (if available of course).

"I'm not really keen on buying San Andreas for the 4th time."

It's one of the many disadvantages of the mac platform. Either not being able to run software you like, or rebuying it. Obviously you thought it was so much better that it was worth all those headaches. So why complain now? -- mac users always claim they are escaping problems and going into some new apple utopia. But they just end up with new problems and more obstacles. Using macs is mostly a pipe dream. I guess it makes a nice web browser. But there are many safe ways to browse within windows. And if you are THAT paranoid, you could sandbox etc..
