Field of Glory, Civ 5 out for OS X

Here's two good strategy game releases for Mac OS X this week (in case you want to spend a little time away from the family after the turkey's carved and eaten). First up, Freeverse has released a game called Field of Glory -- it's a turn-based hex strategy game that's originally based on a tabletop title and has you fighting medieval Roman warfare across single player and multiplayer as well as a number of different scenarios and setups. The game is US $39.95, and includes three expansion packs from the PC version, all ready to go right away.

But as cool as that sounds, here's the real hex-based strategy game you're waiting for: Civ 5 is out now for the Mac. And it's available on Steam under the SteamPlay banner, which means for $50, you get both the Mac and Windows versions, digitally delivered to whatever computer you'd like. If you've ever played any Civ game, you know this series is the pinnacle of strategy titles, and the new version not only adds hexes to the mix, but revolutionizes battle (no more stacks of doom) and streamlines city defense as well. I love Civ, and having it available in this way is something to be very thankful for.

Civ V on OSX is a bit rubbish.
I have a new 15" i7 MBP, and it runs great when I boot into Win 7. I loaded it up in OSX and it immediately dropped down to the lowest settings and ran like a one legged dog.

So, if you already have this purchased in CD form for playing via bootcamp, can you download the mac version for free?

I also purchased Civ V and my system is below specs. It is ridiculous that you need an almost brand new machine. I am also trying for a refund. I downloaded via Steam and there are no system requirements listed for Mac. Buyer beware.

I wonder if the FREE DLC that i've already gotten on the PC will eventually be available for the Mac.

While I am very excited for Civ 5, the system requirements are staggering! They way exceed most FPS games such as MW2 (I mean recommended is a quad-core!). While I have that on my iMac and mac pro, many people may be turned off by this.

seriously the MSR's are way to high, if you haven't bought a new machine in the last 12 months do not buy this. I am trying for a refund with Steam as we speak. Bummer!

This is indeed a great deal. As it is I already had purchased the PC version, so now I can simply download it for my Mac. Even better - Mac and PC players can play together on Steam. Thank you 2K/Firaxis/Aspyr Media/Valve!!

W00T W00T! Been waiting for Civ5! This news makes me so happy, I almost don't care that this is the first post, or that the article points out another interesting-sounding strategy title is also available.
