Photofast AP1000 brings AirPlay audio streaming to your car
Now that iOS 4.2 and AirPlay are officially available for our Apple portable devices, we're starting to see third-party devices that can take advantage of the new capability. Among the first of those is the AP1000 from Japan's PhotoFast. The AP1000 is a Wi-Fi host that gets wired into a car audio system to receive AirPlay streams. The little box supports 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi signals, and once it's connected to 12 volt power and an input on the audio system, it should appear in the AirPlay connection screen on the iOS device. It's probably just as well that there doesn't appear to be any in-vehicle video streaming support with the AP1000, although it could be handy if you have a rear-seat entertainment system for the kids.
For many new vehicles that already have built-in support for Bluetooth audio streaming, the AP1000 doesn't really seem to provide any additional functionality, although the audio fidelity may be somewhat improved. PhotoFast is currently seeking a distributor outside of Japan, so we have no idea when the AP1000 will be available in the U.S. or how much it will cost. Check out the video of a sample installation in the second part of the story.

For a second I thought we were talking about this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AP1000

You have to "create a network" but obviously you won't have an Ethernet cable plugged in. Even though the AE doesn't have an external IP it will still hand out private IPs. Which means you can still take advantage of the AirPlay feature. The only caveat, and a quite large one at that, is because your iPhone is connected to a WiFi it routes all Internet traffic through the WiFi which doesn't have a legit outside connection. If there is a way around this it then would be quite the setup.

I could install this in that console and have a wire-free connection to my iPhone. Love it.

Why not just use an Airport Express?
November 24 2010 at 1:29 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyBeen wondering when this would happen. Car stereo manufactures (heck, the auto makers, too) should look into incorporating AirPlay in their systems. No more wires dangling out the dash. You can keep the phone in your pocket if you want. It would be just a wifi network not hooked up to the net at the very least (maybe they can throw in a 3G radio in it for internet connection.) Just walk into the car and "boom" the phone is connected to the stereo.
November 24 2010 at 12:57 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI currently get audio in my car via a Belkin Bluetooth Audio Receiver & a cell phone charger cable.
This is interesting because the Belkin requires me to manually reconnect every time I get in the car. All wifi networks can connect automatically, and are probably less finicky than bluetooth.

My car automatically connects via Bluetooth everytime I start it up and so should the Belkin. Is there a firmware upgrade to fix that?
November 27 2010 at 12:53 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOff topic, but I am suddenly lamenting that my VW Routan only has composite video inputs for its video entertainment system. An inverter and an Apple TV + AirPlay would have been a great way to serve media. Not that the system could support the 720p signal, which I guess is the point...
November 24 2010 at 11:17 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhy not just get an Composite AV cable? Official one is $50. Can find third party for quite a bit less.
November 24 2010 at 11:41 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI assume your iPhone has to join the wifi network created by the device in order to stream over airplay -- anyone have any guess as to how this will affect internet access? Does the iPhone automatically revert to the cellular data connection if the wifi one is not connected to the internet?
November 24 2010 at 11:00 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThat's my concern too.
November 24 2010 at 11:29 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyEven when you're on a wi-fi network, your phone still picks up cell network IP address, and I believe that it defaults back to 3G/Edge if there's no external gateway.
Although I do lose my network access when I happen to pick up random McDonald's wi-fi (since it needs to authenticate via the web first), so maybe I'm talking out of my ass.
