Found Footage: Injection molding process for the Glif

Over the holiday weekend, we noted that the Glif is now available for ordering (although it's not shipping quite yet). The iPhone 4 stand / tripod mount gadget is a triple threat: functional, attractively designed and the owner of a great backstory.

The Glif guys wanted to share the experience of producing their product, so they released a short video covering the injection molding process out in South Dakota. If you're a fan of the Science Channel's hypnotic How It's Made show, you'll dig this clip. It's embedded in the second half of this post.

Again, congratulations to team Glif on taking their idea from the napkin stage to physical realization.

Thanks to Dustin for the heads-up.

The company I work for makes a product that I think is better than the Glif. It's called the Grippit Smartphone Adapter. It'll connect any smartphone (or dumbphone) to a tripod and, unlike with the Glif, you don't have to take the phone out of its case. Also, it's ten bucks cheaper. Check it out at http://www.digitaltreasures.com/camera_acc_details.php?recordID=07471

Checked it out. Immediate feedback: it is way, way bulkier than the Glif, does not appear that it would tuck into a pocket or bag easily. It is also... uh... not as aesthetically appealing.

Michael, thanks for checking out the Grippit, even if you didn't love it. I'll admit the Glif has a more elegant design than our product, but for those who value utility over elegance, the Grippit is a great and more affordable choice. As I said, you don't have to remove the iphone from its case to use the Grippit. And to address your bulkiness concerns, the Grippit is pocket friendly with dimensions of 2.875" x 2.25". It also functions without the tripod in the same ways as the Glif: as a handy way to prop your phone up while reading, viewing movies, or using as a GPS. I appreciate you letting us plug our product on your post, Michael.

I ordered one of these - but - as a videographer and video editor myself - this video is screaming out for a voice over track or at least some captions. I FF through most of it.
