Found Footage: Steve Jobs demonstrates NeXT Step

Here's a great piece of Apple history. In this video (check it out after the break), Steve Jobs gives a demonstration of a NeXT computer. You'll remember that Steve formed NeXT in 1995 after being ousted from Apple. Years later, in 1996, Apple purchased NeXT after Steve's return. Much of the current Mac OS X system is built on the OPENSTEP foundation.

You needn't look too closely to see the predecessors of Mac OS X, like the dock, the services menu, the home directory and windows that display their contents while being dragged. It's also interesting to hear Steve put the Mac down on a couple of occasions. For a nice illustration of how NeXT features became a part of Mac OS X, look here.

Looking at this, one could argue that Steve's dismissal from Apple was the best thing that happened to the Mac OS.

So... in 2020, will we be watching video clips of Steve Jobs demonstrating iOS 5 for Macintosh and how it's cloud architecture made bulky machines like the Mac Pro obsolete in favor of the MacBadge, a wearable iOS cloud terminal with a built-in pico projector, kinect-like inputs, and voice command, which projects the interface onto any nearby surface and reacts to gestures from the user. The kinect stuff could add extra bells and whistles, like actively keying out areas of the display that your hand is in front of, so the interface isn't projected onto the user's body during use (and several other anal retentive delights...)

What's stopping you? He's using Interface Builder, which is still a part of Xcode.

Damn Steve Jobs reality distortion effect—I want a computer running NeXT now. I mean, up to 50 people can fax from one fax machine!!!!1111oneone

Don't knock it. Back after they killed the production of NeXT computers in 1993, I "rescued" some from the campus computer store. $300 netted me a cube, optical drive, a stack of software, and the laser printer. The lucky bastard before me netted a NeXT Dimension cube.

That late 1993 purchase gave me a UNIX workstation in my house, and allowed me to complete my undergrad CS degree from the comfort of my room instead of the computer lab. That machine (and later a Turbocolor) served me well for 5 years.

TJ Luoma and I hark back to the old NeXT groups on usenet. I even sent him a copy of Wordperfect for NeXTSTEP back in the day...

The only reason I am using a Mac now was because after OS X was released, I went over to the local Mac dealer, opened Mail on an iBook, saw the spinning disc, waxed nostalgic, and bought it right there and then.

Too bad half this stuff did't make it into OS X. Talk about ahead of it's time.

Wow. That is so OS X. So glad Steve came back to save Apple.

And to those complaining about a typo, get a life.

And shortly afterwards, when going back to his home directory, he says 'blammo'.

*thrilled*

Gil Amelio should get a lot of credit for deciding to go with Jobs and NeXT instead of the BeOS. When Jobs came back, it was almost like NeXT taking over Apple from what I have read.
