Apple compact wired keyboard gets discontinued

AppleInsider notes that Apple has quietly discontinued its compact wired keyboard. The keyboard, which has the part number MB869LL/A, has been removed from Apple's online store, yet is still available (presumably, while supplies last) on Amazon for US$46.99.

Apple originally introduced the compact wired keyboard in early 2009 alongside iMac revisions. The wired keyboard was identical to the Apple wireless keyboard with the addition of two USB ports on either side.

For now, it appears that Apple is still selling its wired Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad for US$49 in the Apple online store. Apple also offers a compact Apple Wireless Keyboard for US$69 -- the same Bluetooth keyboard ships with existing desktop Mac models.

I for one prefer the compact keyboards, and own two, one wired at home and a wireless I use at the office.

I often like to have a notepad next to the keyboard as I work. With a full-size keyboard, this becomes awkward, as either the notepad or my pointing device (either a trackball or Apple's trackpad) is too far to my right. And, frankly, I've never had much use for numeric keypads.

Though I'm very happy with my Microsoft Natural Pro keyboard on my Mac (I need it for carpal tunnel reasons) it'd great if Apple could one day release an ergonomic keyboard.

I bought a wired compact keyboard - for my Wii. It works nice, and I have a spare keyboard I can use for our Macs, if necessary.

But it doesn't work when I plug it into my iPad (via the USB connector).

In a word-NO.
didn't like the puck mouse, didn't like the mighty mouse
didn't like the thin, thin aluminum keyboard with the Chiclet keys
If Apple *did* make a good keyboard with backlighting and a good
straightforward mouse, I'd buy 'em. I have both the new kb and mouse, and the only way I'll use 'em is if I have no other options.Shoot, I even found
a pc keyboard out in the dumpster behind my condo, worked fine when I plugged it into my Mac pro, and even that's better than the new ones

Yep, the Mac Pro is the one exception.

Chalk this up to Apple's penchant for minimalism. Not the first time they have crossed too far into the territory of form over function.

If you are pairing a keyboard up to an iMac on a desktop then a wired keyboard makes far more sense than the wireless one with its constant appetite for recharged batteries.

But the greatest utility of the wired keyboard for me is the neatly tucked away USB ports. So much easier than having to reach around to the back of the iMac. And if you are going to have a USB extension cable to give you an easy to reach USB connector at the front of the machine - then why not just have the super thin Apple keyboard wire and be done with it.

I have the full keyboard with numeric keypad and its the best keyboard I have ever used! The two USB ports are part of what makes it great, I use them for flash drives, and the receiver for my wireless mouse.

Only way it could get any better would be to have black keys and backlighting ala MacBook Pro. :)

I'm seriously considering picking up one of the wired compacts from a third party retailer before they disappear.

Prefer keyboard that goes clickety-clack whilst typing -- I have two "old" Lindy full-size keyboards except that the Power button in top right corner doesn't work with Mac Pro.

Hopefully they've gotten wise and will reintroduce a wireless keyboard with numeric keypad. I'm hoping my old wireless keyboard survives until there's a suitable replacement.

This headline is quite possibly the worst headline I've read in a long time.
Apple discontinues compact, wired keyboard

What's with all the grammar nuts on this blog. It is a BLOG. It is not the New York Times.

It's perfectly acceptable to miss out the comma.

Punctuation exists to give a mental pause between thoughts. You don't need a mental pause to read the headline.

Don't think the grammar lesson you learned in grade school applies everywhere.

Why didn't you complain about the missing period?

It's a headline, not a sentence.
