Point Inside is another worthwhile holiday shopping and travel tool
We recently looked at GateGuru, a handy tool to help you navigate around airports. Now I want to point out another good free travel tool, Point Inside, which combines mall maps and info on nearby stores. A new update also allows you to create a wish list. Select a store, and scan an item that you want on your list. The item will be added, and you can share your list on Facebook.
The app produces nice airport maps with lists of stores, ATMs, location of baggage carousels, and parking locations. If you tap on a retail location at either an airport or a mall you'll get a phone number and a description of what they sell.
There are a few negatives. Like GateGuru it doesn't have a complete list of airports in smaller towns. It also drops quite a lot of malls in my area, even some big outlet malls. Searching around the country showed the same issue. Some malls that have been long out of business are listed, while many current malls simply aren't there. The wish list is also a bit odd. You should be able to mail those lists, not just post them on Facebook.
Point Inside is still a handy tool. It's worth adding to your iPhone if you plan to travel or if you expect to spend some time in bigger malls where you aren't familiar with the layout.

@Kleinias I'd have to agree - This app is pretty kickass and is way better then all the one off mall applications (i.e. Westfield, Simon etc).
@JKT - I have yet to find a mall that "has gone out of business" on the App. So it doesn't have the little strip malls... big deal, you don't get lost in a strip mall. It does have most the large & medium sized malls in the US. And has all the malls by me.
@BigBadBandit - agreed... there aren't any malls outside the US and Canada, but at least they've mapped a lot of the huge airports in Europe including FRA and MUC and it looks like the will keep adding more.
Many of the malls have to grant permission prior to mapping.

Back to the drawing board guys.....
Sometimes applications like this sound good in theory but don't actually work all that well and are a little gimmicky. Surprisingly, I actually find "Point Inside" useful and generally pretty helpful. It's free and one of the nice features is that it uses gps to try to show you where you are in the mall or airport (it places your gps location inside of the airport or mall layout).
There are a few improvements that should be made (some of them have been mentioned) but I think this free app is worthy of at least giving it a shot to see if it works out for you.
The eSkyGuide app from GoldenWare is worth checking out for flight schedules, status, weather, airport finder and contact info.

That's a much bigger negative than you're making it out to be. Bad data can quickly ruin such an app.
