TUAW's Daily App: Trucks and Skulls

I'll be honest, at the expense of disagreeing with some of you: I don't really like Angry Birds. Sure, I'll admit it's a quality app, and I obviously can't deny all of those sales. But personally, it's just not my game -- I don't find it nearly as fun as some of the other games on the App Store.

That said, I know plenty of people enjoy Angry Birds, and for those people, Trucks and Skulls will probably scratch the same itch. Gameplay is almost exactly the same, except instead of birds, you're throwing trucks, and instead of pigs, you're attacking ... well, you can probably guess. There are a few new mechanics, a full level maker and screenshot sharing service, and the stages are obviously different, but otherwise, it's more of the physics puzzle goodness that Angry Birds has, only done with a heavy metal, death trucker aesthetic. Heck, maybe that appeals to some of you even more than Rovio's title.

Trucks and Skulls just recently released a free version, and the full game is just US 99 cents on the iPhone and $1.99 on the iPad, with Game Center integration included. If you've already blown through Angry Birds and the recent holiday edition, give Trucks and Skulls a try.

Seems like Angry Birds for Bros. Then again, how many bros do you know that have an iPad?

Whew...I thought *I* was the only one that didn't like Angry Birds. Looks like this game will be trite and boring as well. Thanks!

Add me to the list of people that have no idea what the ruckus is about Angry Birds. By far my most disappointing iOS purchase compared to the hype.

I'm not a contrarian either. Most apps that get hyped I end up liking very much--not so with that one.

Did you get paid by the developer to write this review! This game sucks! Not just it's a cheap ripoff but all the graphics and the gameplay are horrible!

It has a level editor, unlike Angry Birds.

But I'll admit it doesn't have the *polish* of Angry Birds. For example, when restarting a level it zooms back in. It takes forever for you to get to throw another truck, but if you tap at just the wrong moment, it'll inadvertently sling the damn truck. I'm convinced a huge part of Angry Birds' success is that it is super easy to try again. Over and over. Again and again...

The physics are *almost* identical to Angry Birds, but expect to see more mechanics like this in games. Handhelds are finally capable of computing the physics required in realtime.

If you like the aesthetic, it's fun. I like building levels with my son. Keep in mind the Daily App is just a look at an app, and we often look at apps with a free version so you can try them for yourself.

I found Trucks and Skulls to be a version of Angry Birds for Toddlers. This game has no strategy, no frustration, no replay value. I received full points on every single level the first time. Even with Angry Birds Seasons, I still replay trying to get full stars and end up frustrated because I just can't manage to get the angle right.
