Pitchfork gets a custom iPod touch page-topper ad

Apple has developed a custom ad for indie music review site Pitchfork. You can go over and see it right now in any WebKit-based browser (so Safari or Chrome) -- an iPod touch pops up in front of the menu bars, and everything gets swept away in the games being played.

This ad is notable for a few reasons. First of all, Pitchfork, unlike some of Apple's other custom ad targets, is a completely online publication, so Apple is now targeting blog readers as well as traditional newspaper readers. Pitchfork is also known for a certain very indie (some might say hipster) audience, and clearly Apple thinks the iPod touch will "play" with that audience. And finally, 'tis the season -- the iPod touch is on fire lately, and Apple's spending the ad dollars to make sure it stays that way.

Excellent ad, of course, just a little strange to see it on the top of a hip music review site. We'll keep eyes out for any other interesting Apple ads this holiday season.

I don't think either of those sites (Pitchfork or IGN) are using HTML5 yet. It's an mp4 in a div. The doctype is XHTML, but it's going to be interesting to find out if it's Flash or online Advertising that people really despise when HTML5 starts to add more online advertising to sites without the use of Flash.

Just wait until the advertisements are so integrated with the doctype that you can't avoid them like the way people avoid ads by browsing with the Flash plugin turned off. One the other hand, that video/placement is well targeted and well done, maybe that's a plus. :)

Yes it is custom. It's not the exact same ad, or else IGN would have the Pitchfork menu flipping and flopping all over the place. The Pitchfork ad (with the Pitchfork menu elements) only works on the Pitchfork site, and IGN's ad only works on IGN.

That said, that was one of the best web ads I've ever seen in my life.

Please. That's the same type of annoying crap that you'd find in a Flash ad. HTML5 or Flash, it's still irritating as hell.

The ad is beautifully done - if ever you wanted a promo of the potential power of HTML5 over clunky old Flash - there it is.

This isn't the first time Pitchfork has hosted this ad. When Pitchfork's new website launched earlier this year the same ad was showing. Also, a similar ad was shown on Yahoo! Games, also a internet-only publication / portal.
